Description	:	Anna Houser was the youngest child of George H. Houser and Catharine Nicewanger, who were married on 1 Mar 1803 in Shenandoah County, Virginia, and later removed to Fairfield County, Ohio. From census data, her birthday fell between 1 Jun and 25 Jul in the year 1825. Anna's father died in 1841, and on the 1850 census Anna and older sister Lydia were living with their widowed mother. Apparently their mother died sometime after the 1850 census, as she had disappeared by the 1860 census. As of the date of the 1860 census, the two girls were still living together. Apparently their mother died sometime after the 1850 census, as she had disappeared by the 1860 census. As of the date of the 1860 census, the two girls were still living together. Lydia had been married and already widowed, as she was "Lydia Emswiler." (The Fairfield Co. marriage books show that she had married George Emswiler on 2 Jun 1853.) As of the 1870 census, Anna was once again found living with sister Lydia, who had been married and widowed yet again (Elias Williams, m. 26 Sep 1861). Sister Lydia, Anna's caregiver, died on 8 Jan 1872, and Anna was next found on the 1880 census living with another sister, Anna Barbara "Barbary" (Houser) Green. But Barbary died on 23 Nov 1880. The reason that Lydia and Barbary were taking care of Anna became apparent when I noted that she was marked as "idiotic" on the census records. (Political correctness did not yet exist in the nineteenth century.) Born when her mother was 44 years old, Anna may have had Down's syndrome. It is unknown what became of Anna, but probably another family member assumed responsibility for her care. Her burial site is unknown, but she is likely buried near her sister Barbary.
