Olaf Olsen Vinje 2. Theodor Olsen Vinje Anna Johansdatter was born on the Skavlan farm in Norway on July 24, 1881. Her parents were Johan Pedersen Skavlan and Serianna Johannsdatter. Anna was the oldest of four children born to Johan and Serianna. In 1884 her mother Serianna delivered twin girls and died shortly after the delivery. Church records document the twin girls being baptized and the mother buried on the same day. Johan married Olava Helgesdatter in 1887 and church records show five more children were born. The 1900 Norway census shows Anna Johansdatter being employed in the Dalemoen residence. Church records then document her marriage to Ole Vinje in 1902. Ole Vinje was a farmer/carpenter who had just returned from America. Anna's uncle (Nickolai Skavland) and Ole were both carpenters who worked in Bottineau North Dakota. Ole and Anna were married in the Domkirken cathedral in Trondheim. Ole's brother Lorentz Vinje married Christine Kolas on the same day in sequence. The two brothers were the witnesses for each others marriage. The marriages are recorded in the Snasa church with a notation that the weddings were performed in the Domkirken cathedral Nidaros Domkirke is a Norway cathedral which was built over the burial site of Saint Olaf the king of Norway in the 11th century. It has been a destination for pilgrims coming from all of northern Europe. Twin boys, Olaf and Theodore, were born to Ole and Anna Vinje in Snasa on May 30, 1903. There are birth and baptism records in the Snasa church for Ole and Theodore. In 1905 immigration records show the family returned to America. Selma was born to Ole and Anna in 1907. Anna's brother John Skavlan immigrated to Bottineau in 1903. He married Ellen Elizabeth Vandegrift (August 4, 1920 in Schafer, McKenzie county North Dakota), daughter of Abram Vandegrift and Emma C. Cleaver. They raised four children in North Dakota. John Skavlan died in an accident in 1939 in Grand Forks ND. Anna's sister Serine immigrated to America in 1905. She married Gus Jorgenson in 1911 in McKenzie county and had ten children. Serine died in 1952. Anna's sister Olea Lovmo stayed in Norway and died in 1946. She used the last name Lovmo which is the farm she lived on in the 1900 census. Ole Vinje died on November 22, 1908. Anna was able to raise their three young children by washing clothes for others and caring for other children. She filed for a homestead in McKenzie county but could not make it with children. Anna Vinje helped to raise many children besides her own. Anna Vinje died in Bottineau on February 8, 1976 at 94 years of age.
