Read More	Died at her home in New Hamburg December 31, 1908, Mrs. Anna Katharine Heisserer, beloved wife of Vincent Heisserer, aged 64 years, 6 months, and 27 days. Her death was not expected. It came like a bolt from a clear sky, and was a severe shock to her many relatives and friends. The immediate cause of death was heart failure, and she was engaged in her household duties up to a very short time of demise. She was born in the Kingdom of Bavaria on the 4th day of June, 1844, and her maiden name was Anna Katharine Dirnberger. She came to America with her parents when an infant in 1845. It was not the original intention of her Parents to settle in Scott County, but the steam boat upon which they were passengers met with an accident and had to land at Commerce for repairs. This county was but sparcely inhabited then, but her parents learned of a German settlement near Benton, so they came out to see them, and being pleased with the country located one-half mile southeast of Benton upon the farm now owned by Judge W. C. Lambert. Upon this farm with her parents she passed her childhood days and grew to womanhood. The bereaved husband was born in Alsace, at that time a province of France, but since 1870, a part of Germany, on the 21st day of January, 1837. He came to Benton with his parents in 1847. Their destination was Benton when they left their native land, but they first went to St. Louis, not knowing just where Benton was. In St. Louis, they met James [Joseph] Georger, an old acquaintence, and with him Mr. Heisserrer's father first came to Benton. Both decided to locate here and returned to St. Louis, and shipped their families and belongings by boat down the Father of Waters to Commerce and settled on farms, and today there is a very large relationship of these three pioneer families in Scott County, all of whom are among our most prosperous citizens. Vincent Heisserer and Anna Katharine Dirnberger became acquainted early in life, and were happily united in the Holy bonds of matrimony at St. Vincent's Catholic Church in Cape Girardeau, Missouri, on the 20th day of November in 1864. They first settled in Commerce, residing upon a farm, laboring and saving from their accumulations until December 28, 1879, when they moved to Benton, locating on a farm one mile and a half south of Benton. In 1880 Mr. Heisserer opened up a general mercantile business in Benton but continued to reside upon and manage the farm south of Benton, also, coming back and forth from his farm daily, to his business until 1885. He moved then to Benton, embarking in the hotel business. In 1890 he disposed of his mercantile business to his son, W. H. Heisserer, and Frank Miller, a son-in-law, but continued in the hotel business until 1893, when misfortune overtook them and they lost the hotel together with its contents by fire. They thus without a home for a time. Accepting the generous hospitality of Senator Wm. Hunter and wife, lived with them two months, until they could get possession of their home of the farm south of Benton to which they again returned, remaining until 1898. Not being able to secure a suitable residence lot in Benton, and the further fact that there was no Catholic Church in Benton at that time, they purchased property in New Hamburg in 1899, erected a desirable dwelling and located there to pass their declining years near the church of their faith. Mrs. Heisserer was a zealous and consistent member of the church and labored faithfully for its upbilding up to the hour of her death. This union was blessed with twelve children, all of whom lived to be grown except one. They are: Mary Tenkhoff, of Oran; W.H. Heisserer, of Benton; Certrest [Crescent E.] Miller, of Oran; Anna S. Mier, died September 2, 1908, at her home near Randles, Cape Co.; Julia E. Berger [Burger of] Edna, Michael A. Heisserer, who died in Scott county in 1895; Rudolphia Levicoco [Ludovica M.] Proffit of Point Pleasant; Sister M. Olivia, Sisters of St. Francois, of Joliet, Ill; Theon S. Heisserer of Oran; Ida who died in infancy; Coena Dohogne of Kelso, and Zeno A. Heisserer of Silex, Missouri. She had seen 48 grandchildren, 40 of whom survive her, and one great grandchild. Confirmed in the belief of her blessed Redeemer she had an abiding faith in a Heavenly reward, and she bore her burdens with patience and fortitute never losing an opportunity to aid and assist in the discharge of her church duties. Her funeral was conducted at the beautiful Catholic church at New Hamburg on Monday, January 4, 1909, at 10 o'clock a.m. by Fr. Moenig, celebrant of New Hamburg, Fr. Helmbacher, of Oran, Deacon, Fr. Dette, of Benton, SubDeacon, and Fr. Rholing, of Chaffee, Master of Ceremonies. Fr. Klein, of Kelso could not be present on account of poor health and sent a letter of regret. As a token of the very high esteem in which the deceased was held, in a community where she had passed a christian and useful life her funeral, and her burial at New Hamburg Cemetery, was attended by at least six hundred sorrowing friends and relatives, representing all sections of the county, notwithstanding there was a heavy down pour of rain all morning, and at least as many more would have been present had the weather been favorable. She was a Christian woman, a kind and obliging neighbor, a dutiful and loving wife, and a faithful and affectionate mother. She loved her children, her husband, her relatives and her neighbors, and her greatest joy and pleasure was in making those she loved happy. Her life was a busy one and a beautiful Christian one, and she is now enjoying the reward of a peaceful and eternal happiness. [Scott County Democrat, January 7, 1909]
