Ann was born in Murray, Utah, on April 24, 1908, the daughter of Nicholas and Mary Badovinac, immigrants of Badovinci, Croatia. During her childhood the family also lived in Sunnyside, Utah, and Blackfoot, Idaho, before moving to Montana, where her father was employed by Republic Coal Company. Read More	December 7, 2003 Billings Gazette Ann Badovinus Giesick Ann Badovinus Giesick, age 95, died Thursday evening, Dec. 4, 2003, at St. John's Lutheran Home, her residence for the past 17 months. Ann was born in Murray, Utah, on April 24, 1908, the daughter of Nicholas and Mary Badovinac, immigrants of Badovinci, Croatia. During her childhood the family also lived in Sunnyside, Utah, and Blackfoot, Idaho, before moving to Montana, where her father was employed by Republic Coal Company. Her many stories told of their life in the company mining towns of Farreltown, Klein and Roundup and their homestead in the Bull Mountains. She attended school in those communities as well as at the one-room school on the Rahder Ranch. After high school, she moved to Billings and graduated from the Johnston School of Business in 1927, teaching penmanship to cover her tuition. She worked in several law offices, ushered at the repertory theater, seeing many of the great actors and theater productions of the time, and for the Snook Art Company before entering the catering field. In 1930, Ann met John Giesick at a downtown ballroom, and they were married on Sept. 6, 1930, in Livingston. Johnny and Ann began married life at the Giesick family farm west of Park City before moving back to Billings, where they started a family five years later. During WWII, Ann served as a registered neighborhood civil defense "plane watcher." In 1944, following Johnny's return from his work in Edmonton and Whitehorse, as part of the Alaska Hiway and Allied Airbase construction project, they purchased their first home in Park City, where they lived for more than 30 years and raised their family. Ann was an active member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church and taught Sunday School for a number of years. After Johnny's retirement from his career as a Northern Pacific engineer, they moved back to Billings, where they enjoyed many years traveling and spending summers in their vacation trailer at Cooney Dam and in the mountains. After Johnny died in 1989, she continued her travels to visit family and enjoyed the company of her sister Mart, after she returned from Texas to live nearby. They both lived in Sage Towers as "the sisters" for a number of years. Ann was admired for her giving and dignified persona, her talent as chef (especially for her Croatian holiday bread, povitica), gardener, seamstress and needlework craftsman. Her quilts and afghans were always in production. She is survived by daughter, Joanna Giesek of Billings; son, Jeffrey (Pat) Giesick of Lynnwood, Wash.; sister Marion (Ken) Colman of Billings; nine grandchildren, Matthew Southworth of Oakland, Calif., Rebecca (Mark) Nazarenus of Fishers, Ind., Karrie Giesick, Tracy Giesick, Alisa (Mark) Schoon, Brad Giesick, Kodi (Steve) McRae, all of Lynnwood, Wash., Stephanie (Al) Aragon of Clayton, Calif., and Brandy (Paul) Gumke of Snohomish, Wash.; 21 great-grandchildren; sisters-in-law, Lucille Badovinus of Pompey's Pillar, Amy Badovinus of Payson, Ariz., and Bea Badovinus of Cody, Wyo., and a number of loving nieces and nephews. Preceding her in death, in addition to her father and mother, were brothers, Nick Badovinus of Payson, Ariz., George Badovinus of Pompey's Pillar, Charles Badovinus of Cody, Wyo., and sister Martha (Mart) Barton of Billings. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Mount Olive Lutheran Church, 2336 St. Johns Ave, Billings. In lieu of flowers, contributions are suggested to the Billings Symphony Orchestra & Chorale, 201 N. Broadway, Billings, MT 59101 or to St. John's Foundation, 3940 Rimrock Road, Billings, MT 59102.
