Smith, the oldest daughter of Henry and Rachel Smith, was born at Williamsburg, Pennsylvania, July 2, 1851 and died at the Mercy Hospital in Council Bluffs, Iowa, July 13, 1928, at the age of 77 years, and 11 days. Her family were among the early pioneers coming to Iowa in 1868, settling at Davenport, Iowa and in 1873, coming to Montgomery County and establishing a home northeast of Emerson. Smith, the oldest daughter of Henry and Rachel Smith, was born at Williamsburg, Pennsylvania, July 2, 1851 and died at the Mercy Hospital in Council Bluffs, Iowa, July 13, 1928, at the age of 77 years, and 11 days. Her family were among the early pioneers coming to Iowa in 1868, settling at Davenport, Iowa and in 1873, coming to Montgomery County and establishing a home northeast of Emerson. In 1881 she was united in marriage to John Calvin Jacobs and to this union were born, Eddie, who died in infancy and Elmer of Carson, Iowa. Mr. Jacobs passed away in 1908. In 1912 she was married to David Dement, a Civil War Veteran and who died on June 9, 1927. In her young girlhood, she united with the Methodist Episcopal Church and at the time of her passing in death a member of that Church in Emerson. She was a member of the Woman's Relief Corps and the American Legion Auxiliary. She leaves to mourn her passing away her son, Elmer and wife of Carson, Iowa; her brothers, A. W. Smith of Plattsmouth, Nebraska; A. L. Smith, Council Bluffs, Iowa; G. W. Smith, Terry, Montana; H. A. Smith, Omaha, Nebraska; Harry Smith, Ashland, Nebraska; D. R. Smith, Ash Creek, Minnesota; and her sisters, Mrs. W. A. Myers, Bristol, Illinois; Mrs. Ida Evans, Emerson; Mrs. Kate Steen, Emerson; Mrs. Ed Clark, Worland, Wyoming; Mrs. Lee France, Emerson, and Mrs. Frank Lang, Emerson. Life's labor done, as sinks the clay, Light from its load the spirit flies. While Heaven and earth combines to say, How blest, the righteous when she dies. The funeral services were conducted at the Methodist Church, Emerson, Sunday by her minister, Rev. Lucius L Smith and interment was made in the beautiful Emerson Cemetery and the very impressive services of the Woman' Relief Corps were conducted. A quartet consisting of Mrs. Clara Thorson, Mrs. Avia Taylor, Kenneth Shaw, and Ray Field sang with Mr.s Esma Barn at the piano. The pall bearers were E. E.
