As you all know, Mae was a special kind of person - the kind who made everyone she came in contact with laugh. It was a combination of her often unfiltered honesty and her jovial spirit that drew people to her. You never had to wonder what she was thinking because she would be sure to tell you in no uncertain words, often times causing your jaw to drop! But that was what everyone loved and admired most about her. Mae grew up in the mountains of North Carolina on a large farm. Her Father raised cattle and owned the local store and gas station. Her Mother was a seamstress and gardener. Mae had 7 brothers and sisters. Two of her sisters passed recently and we know the three of them are all looking down on us here today smiling at all the wonderful friends and family who have come to celebrate Mae's life. You can be sure Mae is cutting up about something and they are telling her to “Keep it down!” Mae and Frank grew up in the small community of Rebels Creek in homes that were just around the corner from each other. They started dated in high school and were married after Frank returned from the Air Force. After they married, she and Frank decided to leave country life for Miami where she became a Dental Assistant and he went to work for the airlines. During their 63 years of marriage, they enjoyed traveling, entertaining and attending events and parties. At parties, Mae just loved to dance and could get a room full of people laughing so hard they almost wet their pants! She also enjoyed playing cards with friends, tennis, concerts, going to yard sales and flea markets and volunteering for pretty much everything involving her daughter’s school and after school activities. The thing her daughter Jill says she loved most about her Mom is that she was so playful and free spirited! She loved listening to Elvis, Neil Diamond, the Bee Gees and Cher. Her playfulness, as well as her love of music and art greatly influenced her daughter. Some of you may not know that Mae was a fantastic artist. Many of her paintings are still hanging in her house and others have been sold or gifted to friends. Growing up, her daughter remembers how her Mom spent many hours in her greenhouse full of plants, as well as sewing and shopping -especially for shoes! Jill and Frank both remember how Mae had a knack for making every holiday and birthday special! This was never more apparent as when Mae’s grandson Riley came into her life. She spoiled and hugged and kissed on him from the day he was born up until a few weeks ago. He will always remember and cherish his extraordinary grandmother “Nanna”. Throughout her life, Mae has been a thoughtful and kind daughter, sister and friend, a wonderful wife, a loving Mother and the best grandmother in the world! When her brother-n-law, Scotty , came to live with her and Frank, she welcomed him as if he were her own son. The 'Mae' most of you saw in the last few years may have lost just a bit of her spunk as Alzheimer's took its toll on her mental acuity. But thru it all, she maintained her feisty personality, loving way and sense of humor. She had good days where her true self was recognizable and days where she just couldn't say or do much but the important thing is that she was happy and loved and cared for by her family and friends. When her family thinks of her now, they know she is in heaven probably entertaining the other angels or listening to Elvis play his guitar . . . or maybe she has taken up her passion for painting again. One thing is for sure . . . she is making those around her laugh. That was her special talent and it will surely be missed by all!
