Carstensen died at her home last Friday, May 29, after an illness and suffering of nearly four years, at the age of 86 years, 3 months and 27 days. Funeral services were held Monday afternoon at two o'clock and interment was made in the Walnut cemetery. The Rev. C. E. Gabler, of the Peace Evangelical and Reformed church officiated. She is survived by two children, Katherine Carstensen and William Carstensen, both of Walnut; and a host of other relatives and friends. Anna Magdeline was born February 2, 1856, in Germany, the daughter of Johann and Anna Paarmann. At the age of one year and 8 months, she came to the United States of America with her parents and after a prolonged voyage on a sailing vessel, they finally settled in Clinton county. Miss Paarmann was united in marriage to Peter Christian Carstensen, who had come from Germany in 1870. After living in Clinton, Lyons, and Davenport they came to Walnut in 1876 and resided here since that time. Six children were born to this union. The joy of family life was interrupted through the death of Mr. Carstensen in 1912, leaving many responsibilities upon the shoulders of his life companion. In the same year, death struck another severe blow to this family when their daughter, Anna, passed away and again in 1924, a son, Carl Hermann died. Another daughter, Annie and a son Herman, died in infancy. Mrs. Carstensen's surviving children did all that a loving daughter and son could do to make life pleasant for her and sacrificed a great deal to make their mother's sojourn on earth a happy one. For nearly four years prior to her death, Mrs. Carstensen was in ill health and death relieved her of her sufferings on Friday, May 29, 1942. She was a faithful member of Peace Evangelical and Reformed church of Walnut and had been an active member of the Ladies Circle of that church during the days that she enjoyed better health. She was a kind neighbor and friend and will be missed by a large number of acquaintances. (The Walnut Bureau, June 4, 1942, p. 1)
