The Nelson Gazette, Thursday, November 28, 1996 ========================= Anna Margaret (Heye) Becker, the oldest child of Johann (Dick) and Sophia (Rothfuss) Heye, was born May 25, 1899, in rural Adams County, near Glenvil, Nebraska. She passed away at Brodstone Memorial Nuckolls County Hospital in Superior, Nebraska, Sunday, November 24, 1996, at the age of 97 years. When Anna was five years old, the family moved to Glenvil so she could attend the Glenvil School. At that same time the family switched from their native German language to English. She graduated from the ten year Glenvil School and then commuted by train to Fairfield to receive her 12th grade diploma. After graduation from high school, Anna worked as a teller in the Glenvil State Bank until she married Clarence W. Becker on March 10, 1920. To this union were born two daughters, Marjorie and Marion. They lived in Glenvil, Hastings, Nelson, Lincoln, Peru and Tecumseh. Clarence passed away May 2, 1978. Anna always desired to attend college. After her daughters had attended or graduated from college, she had the opportunity to do so. When Clarence was employed by the City of Peru, Anna entered college at Peru State College, earning her Bachelor of Arts degree in 1949. She received her Master of Arts degree in 1963 from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. She taught Business and Biology in Steinaur, Cook and Glenvil and Business in Nelson and Lawrence, retiring in 1971. Anna then worked as the acting Nuckolls County Superintendent in 1971. After her retirement, Clarence and Anna enjoyed traveling, going coast to coast visiting family and attending flower conventions. Having a Biology minor, she became involved in perstamon and day lily hybridizing. She also loved raising African Violets and shared them with many family and friends. Anna was a member of the Nelson Community United Church of Christ, Peace Circle, Wheelers and Dealers for Christ, Bridgettes and a charter member of the National Penstamon Society and National Hemorcalis Association and the Order of Eastern Star. Besides her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by one brother, Ernest, and four sisters, Hermine Blood, Helene Heye, Marie Sprague and Esther Blackwood. Survivors include two daughters, Marjorie Adamson of Nelson and Marion Marriott-Johnson of Blue Jay, California; two sisters, Elizabeth Classen of Denver, Colorado, and Margaret Dahlke of San Benito, Texas; eight grandchildren, Nancy Fuller of Mabelton, Georgia, Dean Adamson of York, Beverly Sutherland of Omaha, Sharon Wenig of Kearney, Janet Adamson of Lincoln, Linda Wallis of Kingwood, Texas, Sandra Carr of Bountiful, Utah, and Robert Marriott of Alta Loma, California; nine step grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren. Funeral services were held Wednesday, November 27, 1996, at 10:30 a.m. from the Community United Church of Christ in Nelson, Nebraska, with Rev. Royce Buchtel officiating. Congregational hymns of "What A Friend We Have In Jesus" and "In The Garden" were sung with Carlita Price as organist and accompanist. Pallbearers were Dean Adamson, Zachery Adamson, Cliff Sutherland, William Fuller, Michael Wenig and Lloyd Carr. Burial was in Nelson Cemetery.
