Description	:	Mrs. Margaret Holter's tombstone was noted in Names In Stone, Vol. 1, p.587. She was the wife of George Holter of Frederick County, Maryland. The bronze plaque placed later by family in memoriam to her husband is on her tombstone, not his. Based on church records, Margaret's given name was Anna Margaret. Common practice in German Lutheran households of that time was that a child would be given a baptismal name (in this case Anna) and a common name, Rufname, (Margaret). The baptismal name would be used only for religious purposes with the Rufname being used for common everyday purposes. ... This is probably based on the baptismal sponsor for daughter Anna Margareth who is listed as "Salome, wife of Conrad Arnold" in the records of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Frederick. Note, however, that there is no indication of relationship and Salome could just as likely be a sister, aunt, or friend, as Margaret's mother. Margaret had 10 children, 9 of whom survived to adulthood. See husband George's memorial for full listing. On 6Jun1806, Margaret served as baptismal sponsor for daughter Catherina's daughter Margaretha Beall. She is listed as "Margar. Holder, grandmother" in the church records of Evangelical Lutheran Church of Frederick, MD. Margaret was widowed between 1810 and 1820 when she first appears as head of household in the census for District 1, Frederick County, MD. Household consists of: 1 male 16-25 (youngest son William, age 25) 1 female <10 (probably a granddaughter) 1 female 16-25 (William's wife Magdalene, age 20) 1 female 45+ (Margaret, 65 listed as head of household) 1 female slave <14 (eliza, 12, who was left to margaret in her son john's will and be freed when she turned 16)
