Mrs. Lortz Passed Away Wednesday At Son's Home Mrs. C. D. Lortz, one of the well known and highly respected women of this community, passed away early Wednesday morning at the home of her son, Alfred Lortz, in English township, where she and her husband were spending a few days. The call came suddenly, a stroke of apoplexy being the immediate cause of her death. Mrs. Lortz, as Anna Goodman, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Goodman, pioneers of English township, was born at Millersburg, Iowa, March 28, 1860, where her father was at that time operating a grist mill. Here she spent her first school days, later she attended the country school after the family had moved to the farm known as the old Goodman Homestead. She being the eldest of a large family, she had to assume many of the responsibilities in caring for the younger members of the family, because of her mother's infirmities and early death. On March 14, 1886, she was united in marriage to Mr. C. D. Lortz, son of a Pilot pioneer, and here the home was established, and continued until they retired from the farm to enjoy their fine home in Williamsburg. She is survived by the husband and four sons: Clarence, Erwin, Alfred, and Everett, all well known citizens of English and Pilot townships. Besides these she leaves eleven grandchildren, also two sisters, Mrs. W. K. Lortz, of Williamsburg, and Mrs. John Hickey of Udell, la. The surviving brothers are Lou Goodman of Williamsburg, and Dan Goodman of English township. One sister, Mrs. L. J. White, having preceded her in death. The funeral services were held Friday, August 12, at two o'clock. A short service at the home followed by the regular service at Williamsburg Presbyterian church. Interment was made in the Pilot Grove cemetery."
