On Sunday morning, April 10, 1916, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Herman Sodawasser and family, in this city occurred the death of Mrs. Anna Martha Kohler, a pioneer resident of Guttenberg. She was 83 years, 6 months and 23 days of age at the time of her death, and the cause of her death was mostly due to old age. She had been ailing for some time, having had strokes of paralysis. Deceased was born in Sachsen-Weimer, Germany, on September 23, 1832, and later came to the United States. She was married to Mr. I. Kohler, who preceded her in death many years ago. In the death of Mrs. Kohler this city loses another one of its pioneer residents, she having lived her for many years. She was an ambitious woman during her entire life, and was always ready with heart and hand to help those in need, which won her many friends. She was also a faithful member of St. John's Lutheran Church, of this city, and she was a true christian woman. For the past few years she made her home with her daughter, Mrs. Herman Sodawasser, where she passed away on Sunday morning. She was a kind and loving mother and friend and her death is deeply mourned by three daughters, Mrs. Herman Sodawasser and Mrs. John Mueller, of Guttenberg, and Mrs. Kobel, of Superior, Wisconsin, two sons, George and Bernard Kohler, of Guttenberg, a number of grand and great grandchildren, and many other relatives and friends. Funeral services were held at St. John's Lutheran Church in this city on Tuesday afternoon, Rev. Janzig officiating. Interment was made in the City Cemetery. The funeral was largely attended, which showed that deceased was held in high esteem by all who knew her. ++++ OBITUARY OF HUSBAND Elkader Register, IA, Thursday, June 19, 1902, pg. 7, col. 2 Innick Kohler Sr., a resident of Guttenberg for many years, died at his home last Friday [June 13]. The cause of death was attributed to old age, being at the time of his death 92 years, 6 months and 21 days old. Mr. Kohler was born in Bielarm, Rein, Germany, Nov. 15, 1809, where he remained until 25 years of age. In the spring of 1834 he sailed for America, arriving in this country June 2nd, of the same year, and came to Clayton county the following year, and since that time has made Guttenberg his home. A wife, three sons and three daughters are left. The body was laid to rest in the City cemetery. Funeral services were conducted by Rev. Fr. Sommerlad, Lutheran minister of Garnavillo.
