Description	:	Emile Marynowich was born in the Ukraine in 1898, and in May of 1920 married Annie Krawchuk, who was born in 1899, also in the Ukraine. In 1928 at the age of 30, Emile left the Ukraine, his wife and four children, and migrated to Canada, landing up in the Morecambe area. In 1928 at the age of 30, Emile left the Ukraine, his wife and four children, and migrated to Canada, landing up in the Morecambe area. Like many other fathers who left their families and homeland, Emile worked that first year for the local farmers, with the thought and hope of bringing his family to Canada. One year later, Emile's dream became a reality when Annie, daughter Tilly and sons Henry, Walter and Mike joined him in the Morecambe - Lac Bellevue area. The next few years saw Emile and Annie working for the local farmers and by the year 1934, they were able to purchase some land in the Lac Bellevue area. By this time Steve and Esther were born, and the task of clearing land, and raising a family had begun, only to end in tragedy a short time later. Mike, son of Emile and Annie recalls that there were approximately 13 acres cultivated on that farm when they purchased it and that the following year they were able to clear some 5 more acres. By the year 1935, Emile and Annie had two more children, Alex and Ernest. By this time they had a family of six boys and two girls. Because the land was very much undeveloped, and more cultivated land was needed, Emile decided that mechanization would aid them with the difficult job of land clearing. The Maryynowich's purchased a stump pulling machine (today it would be called a winch of sorts) which was operated by a team of horses and would greatly reduce the hard manual work that went into pulling of the trees and stumps from the hard ground. In 1936, during one of these operations, the hook of the cable broke, causing the cable to spring, and strike Mrs. Marynowich. She was taken to a hospital almost immediately by a neighbour, Mrs. D. Noel. The injuries were serious enough that after two weeks, and at the age of 37, Mrs. Marynowich passed away, leaving behind a husband and eight children, the youngest being 9 months. As Tilly, then 14 recalls, "After Mother's death, life had to go on and I took on the responsibility of raising the children, being of a tender age myself, things were pretty tough and hard, looking back at it now. I don't know how I did it. I remember I cried every day that first year. Our neighbour, Annie Taschuk, showed me how to make bread. I baked about 8-10 loaves every 5-6 days, melted snow in the big barrel for the family washing, made a big garden every year, and little by little my brothers and sister grew up and helped some. It still brings tears to my eyes when I think of all the hardships we had, but in spite of it all, the children grow up, and in their early teens went to work." By 1940, the boys were old enough to handle farm equipment and began farming. Emile Marynowich worked for the CPR in the summer of 1940 in the Lethbridge area and helped to support his family back home with his 38 cents per hour wages. As years went by, the wages also became higher and in 1945 Emile purchased a half section of land so that the boys could continue farming. Emile was employed for the CPR until the year 1957, then changed to another job in Edmonton as a janitor of the CKUA building. At age 63, Emile returned to St. Paul and lived there until October 1966. After leaving St. Paul, and residing in Victoria, BC, he then moved to Vancouver BC. As of this writing, Emile lives in a senior citizens' home in New Wesminster BC.
