It is believed that her clothing caught fire from a cook stove. Her son had gone to the post office, and upon his return about a half-hour later discovered smoke and fire in the house. He found his mother dead at the bottom of a flight of stairs in the basement. Clayton County Sheriff Forrest Fischer and Carl Schultz, Monona undertaker, were called to the scene to investigate in the absense of Coroner E. W. Tuecke of Garnavillo. +++ The Monona Leader, IA, Thursday, February 10, 1949 MRS. BERNS FIRE VICTIM Mrs. Anna Berns, 85, was found burned to death in her home Wednesday morning by her son, Linus, when he returned from town. He had started the fire in the kitchen stove at 7 o'clock in the morning for her and ate breakfast with her. He left her shortly after to get the mail and do some shopping. When he left she had started washing dishes. When he returned about 10 o'clock, he found the kitchen filled with smoke. He called for his mother, but received no reply. He then went upstairs in search for her. As he came downstairs he noticed flames shooting out of the cellarway leading from the kitchen. He doused some water on the fire to put it out and then went down to the basement, where he found Mrs. Berns lying at the foot of the stairs. It is thought that her clothes caught fire from the kitchen stove and in her anxiety to put out the flames fled to the basement. It was found that a lid of the cook stove was partially open. A burned piece of apron that she had worn was also found on the kitchen floor. Mr. Berns after ascertaining that his mother was beyond help rushed to his home and summoned his wife and daughter, Rose Marie. When they returned they again found flames breaking out on the cellarway, which they extinguished. Sheriff Forest Fischer of Elkader was summoned since it was impossible to contact the coroner. He termed her death a result of catching fire from the stove. Mrs. Berns for the last several years was left home alone very little. Her son, Linus, always stayed with her every night and during most of the day, taking care of the fires and the home. She is survived by three sons, Alex, Albert, and Linus; two daughters, Mrs. Walter Matt and Mrs. Edmund Ruff; and one brother, Ben Nieland of Guttenberg. Funeral services will be held at St. Patrick's church Friday morning at 10 o'clock. +++ The Monona Leader, IA, Thursday, February 17, 1949 FUNERAL SERVICES FOR MRS. BERNS Funeral services for Mrs. Joe Berns, 84, were held last Friday morning at St. Patrick's church with Rev. Luke Donlon celebrating the requiem mass. Burial was at St. Joseph's cemetery at Garnavillo. Mrs. Berns died Wednesday morning, Feb. 9, from burns as a result of her clothing catching fire from the kitchen stove. As Anna Nieland, she was born the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Herman Nieland, Feb. 14, 1864. She was married to Joe Berns at Guttenberg. They lived on a farm at National until 1918, when they retired to Monona. She was preceded in death by her husband, June 9, 1936, and three children. She is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Edmund (Clara) Ruff and Mrs. Walter (Frances) Matt of National; three sons, Alex and Linus of Monona and Albert of National; 19 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren. Pallbearers were eight grandsons who were: Hubert Berns, Joseph A. Berns, Cyril Matt, Harold Matt, Ivan Berns, Decellis Berns, Erwin Ruff, and Edmund Ruff.
