(Notes from original page manager) ******************* Cherokee Sentinel, Aug. 29, 1930, page 1: Mrs. Luther Hargrove Drowned In Nebraska Our whole town was shocked Wednesday when the word was received that Mrs. Luther Hargrove, who was visiting with a brother and sister at Central City, Nebraska, had drowned while swimming in a pool with relatives. Little information is available but it is believed that she suffered a heart attack. Mr. Hargrove left immediately for Central City. Mrs. Hargrove, accompanied by her four children had been up there a week. She was 37 years of age. The remains will be brought back today and funeral services will be held Sunday at the Christian church. Mrs. Hargrove was a mighty fine little woman, beloved by the whole town. She had been a great worker in the Christian church here. Obituary next week. Cherokee Sentinel, Sept. 5, 1930, page 1: Last Sad Rites For Mrs. Hargrove Funeral services for Mrs. Anna opal Hargrove, wife of Mr. Luther Hargrove, were held at the Christian Church Sunday afternoon at 2:30 p.m. with the Rev. G.W. Corporan, assisted by B.W. Davis, in charge. The funeral was one of the largest ever held in Cherokee and the casket which contained the remains was covered with beautiful flowers, the tribute of many loving friends. A quartette composed of Messrs. Homer Buergey, H.E. Smedley, Misses Kathryn Wilson and Virginia Stough sang her favorite hymn, "Shall We gather at the River" and also "Tell Mother I'll Be There" and "Sunset and the Evening Star." her brothers were pall bearers. Anna Opal Culbertson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Marion Culbertson, was born March 2nd, 1894 at Hale, Mo. Died August 27, 1930 at Central City, Nebr. at the age of 36 years, 4 months and 25 days. She was married to Luther B. Hargrove on Oct. 29, 1914 at Dederick, Mo. To this union four Sanford Leroy, 14 years, Helen Marie, 12, Marguerite Ellen, 10 and Robert Lee, 18 months. She joined the United Brethren Church at the age of 13 years and a year after her marriage, at a revival, she and her husband joined the Christian Church, and she was an untiring worker. She leaves to mourn her loss besides her husband and children, her mother, Mrs. Kate Culbertson; four sisters, Mrs. Will Pressler of Central City, Nebr., Mrs. John Rogers of Nevada, Mo., Mrs. Albert Schwamb, Statesberry, Mo., and Miss Kate Culbertson of Wichita, Kansas. None brothers: Stanley, John, Cecil, Ben and Marion Culbertson of Nevada, Mo., Leland Culbertson of Eldorado Springs, Mo., Henry Culbertson of Dederick, Mo., Alfred Culbertson and Joe Culbertson of Central City, Nebr. All were here but Joe, who was unable to be present. besides those named she leaves to mourn her loss, a number of relatives and a host of friends. It was first stated she had come to her death by drowning, and the real cause was heart trouble. In a party of relatives they had gone on a picnic that day and two hours after lunch time, they had decided to go swimming in the pool. As she started to swim, her head went under, but her sister grabbed her before her hair got wet, but she was gone, only gasped once. Everything possible was done to revive her, but to no avail. They came to Cherokee eight years ago. She was "Martha" in the Eastern Star, Secretary of the Home Culture Club, a member of the Christian Church and the Missionary Society and a member of the City Federation of Clubs. Everybody was her friend. her life speaks for her character. She was a ministering angel to the sick and in her sweet and quiet way she was at their bedside doing what she could for them. Surely she was one of God's saints, a pure, good, lovely woman. The church has lost a member whose place cannot be filled, the people a friend whose influence was always for the best, the husband a devoted companion, and the children a loving mother. The Eastern Star had charge of the services at the grave, and she was laid to rest in the Cherokee cemetery.
