When the children were all raised, Bernard married Jeannette (Krenzer) Schroedter Dec. 21, 1955. Jeannette was born June 2, 1909. At the age of 17 she was teaching school in the Sandhills and later in rural Dodge County schools. She married Rudolph Schroedter Nov. 11, 1935. They had two children Bill and Dora Kay (Aldrich). Rudolph died May 5, 1940. Jeanette later attended Wayne State College and received her degree in elementary and secondary education in 1950 from Midland Lutheran College. Bernard and Jeanette lived in North Bend and had 35 years together which they enjoyed playing cards, going to the senior center to eat, and entertaining family. Bernard farmed until the depression hit. Giving up farming, they moved to North Bend where he worked for Kendrick Garage, Hanson Garage and Pollard Implement. He also was a night watchman for several years. He later opened his own U.S. Repair Shop. After closing that he worked for North Bend Grain Company until he retired. He was able to see all of his children graduate from North Bend High School, his only son graduate from college and all get married and have families. He was a member of St. Charles Catholic Church and was instrumental in getting the first American Legion baseball team organized, for which he was honored at the 1999 Old Settlers Picnic with all of his children in attendance. Bernard did a lot of carpentry jobs and helped build the auditorium, which was a WPA project. He loved making and creating things in his shop. Cutting tomato stakes one year, the saw took his finger to the first knuckle. He loved playing his harmonica and playing cards. Bernard died Feb. 2, 1990. He left behind his five children, 24 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren. One great-grandson and one great-granddaughter preceded him in death. Jeannette was an active member of the United Presbyterian Church, volunteered at Birchwood Manor and with the bloodmobiles and played with several card clubs. She moved to North Bend Estates and became involved with the Senior Center. When she moved to Merrick Manor she found a new artistic outlet, painting. More information: North Ben Argus Aug 11, 1938 Illness Fatal to Mrs. Bernard Emanuel A deep wave of sorrow settled over the community Monday evening when it was learned that Mrs. Bernard Emanuel, mother of five small children, had passed away. Mrs. Emanuel had been in ill health for some time and recently she submitted to an operation. Mr. Emanuel and his parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. N. Emanuel, were summoned to the University Hospital in Omaha Monday morning when Mrs. Emanuel's condition became alarming. Mary Plantenberg, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Plantenberg, was born September 19, 1898, at Howells, Nebraska. Her age at death was 39 years, 10 months and 19 days. She was married to Bernard Emanuel, November 5, 1921, at Crofton, Nebraska. Following their marriage they lived in the Ridgeley vicinity until two years ago when they moved to North Bend. Besides her husband she is survived by five children. Bernice 12, Patricia Ann 11, Rita 9, Kenneth 7, and Celine 5. Her mother, Mrs. Mary Plantenberg of Crofton. two sisters and five brothers also survive. The sisters and brothers are: Mrs. Joseph Emanuel, Jr. of Pleasant Valley vicinity, Miss Bernadine Plantenberg, Crofton, Jack and Herman Plantenberg, Columbus, Wisconsin: Fred Plantenberg of San Pedro, California; Arthur Plantenberg of Omaha, and Casper Plantenberg of Crofton. Mrs. Emanuel was a kindly, devoted wife and mother and a loyal friend. She was a member of St. Charles Catholic church and of St. Ann's Altar society. Funeral services conducted by Rev. W. J. Thies were held this (Thursday) morning at 9:00 o'clock at St. Charles church. Pall bearers were: Leo, Edward and John Emanuel, Jack, Herman and Arthur Plantenberg. Burial was made in St. Mary's cemetery at Ridgeley. –North Ben Argus Aug 11, 1938
