Smith, in St. John's Catholic church with the Rev. John Carpenter officiating. Mrs. Smith died suddenly at her home Tuesday, March 23 of a massive coronary at the age of 90. Pallbearers were Roger Maruska, Milwaukee, Kenneth Maruska, Elma, Arthur Rausch, Leo Martin, Gerhard Setter and Myles Kupka, Ft. Atkinson. Mrs. Smith was born May 1, 1891 at Alta Vista, the daughter of Frank and Margaret (Rausch) Maruska. She attended school in that area and also Mercy Crest Hospital School of Nursing in Dubuque. On April 23, 1914 she was united in marriage to John Smith at St. Bernard's Catholic Church in Alta Vista. They were the parents of seven children, all of whom survive. They are Alma M. Smith of Milwaukee, Wis.; Cleone C. Smith, Fort Atkinson; Virgil F. Smith, Cope, Colo.; Mrs. Roselle Cassata, Phoenix, Ariz.; Mrs. Martha MacPherson, Cleveland, Ohio; Joan Wurzer, Milwaukee, and Jene J. Smith, Ft. Atkinson. Soon after their marriage, the Smiths moved to a farm southwest of St. Atkinson where they lived until 1955 when her husband passed away and she moved to town. Mrs. Smith then returned to her nursing profession at the Decorah Hospital where she worked for several years. She was a member of St. John's Church, the Rosary Society, a member of Guild, also Mercy Crest Hospital Alumni and American Red Cross Society. She was an active member of the Retired Senior Lunch Program and the Retired Senior Volunteer Program of Winneshiek County. Besides her children, survivors include 12 grand-children; nine great-grandchildren; one brother, Ed Maruska of Detroit, Mich. and one sister Mary Wells of Cresco. She was preceded in death by five brothers, Frank, Cresco; Joseph, Madison, Wis.; George, Detroit, Mich.; John, Rochester, Minn., and Bill Maruska, Elma; and one sister, Margaret Bodie. Chekal Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements and burial was in the church cemetery.
