Anna Verdean (Meyer) Burkle was born on February 6, 1920 to Wort and Meta (Ohling) Meyer in Grundy County near Wellsburg, Iowa. Anna was baptized at Wellsburg Reformed Church where she also attended Catholicism. Anna grew up on a farm, helping with the chores. She attended Wellsburg School through sixth grade and seventh-eighth at NorthStar in Franklin County, near Bradford. Anna married Ernest Burkle on December 28, 1938 at the home of the bride’s parents, near Bradford. They were the parents of three children: Gilbert, William, and Beverly. The couple farmed for forty years near Geneva, Iowa until retiring and moving to Ackley in 1979. Anna worked two seasons at the Ackley Canning Factory. She worked as a dietary aide at the Presbyterian Home in Ackley for eight years, and did some volunteer work for the Presbyterian Home, Thrift Store, and delivered Meals on Wheels. She was an active member of St. Peter’s United Church of Christ, rural Geneva. She sang in the choir and sang duets with her brother, Lambert and in trios and quartets. Hymns were always her favorite songs. She served in many capacities on church committees, and taught Sunday School. Anna and her daughter were church custodians for several years. Anna enjoyed gardening, embroidering, sewing, dancing, and bowling. After moving to town, she enjoyed golfing and walking with the neighborhood gal’s coffee group. In 2008 Anna moved to Genesis Place in Ackley where she enjoyed eleven years of making new friends and playing a lot of card games. She cherished her family. Spending time with them was her greatest joy. She is survived by her son, Gilbert (Sandy) Burkle of Sun City, Arizona; daughter, Beverly (Mike) Bonewitz of Ackley, Iowa; eight grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren and six great-great grandchildren; daughter in-law, Margaret Burkle of Hampton, Iowa and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Ernest; a son, William Burkle; one brother, Lambert Meyer, and a stillborn son.
