Steichen, a resident of the Alton Community for over 70 years, died at her home Wednesday, March 26th at 6:25 P.M. after an illness of some months. Anna Klein was born in Diekirsch, Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, October 26, 1873. Wh en 14 years of age she made the long journey from her native country to the United States, coming to Alton where she lived with her uncle and aunt, the late Mr. and Mrs. Mike Schroeder. She was married to John T. Steichen June 13, 1893 and the couple observed both 50th and 60th wedding anniversaries with their family here. Mr. Steichen had often said they would celebrate their 65th anniversary--but she did not quite make it. She was a patient sufferer in her severe illness, and had the devoted care of her husband and family. Survivors include Mr. Steichen; three daughters: Mrs. Tony Klein of Sheldon, Mrs. Theo. Joanning of Granville and Mrs. Jerome Wolf of Sedalia, Missouri; a brother, Matt Klein of Sioux Falls; 9 grandchildren and 36 great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held Saturday at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Reverend Reising officiating, with interment in the parish cemetery. Music was by St. Mary’s senior choir and organist. Pallbearers were Otto Probst, Peter Streff, J.T. Even, John Van Gronigen, O.N. Homan and Carl Homan. Mrs. Steichen was a wonderful neighbor and earned the devotion of her neighbors as well as of her children and hundreds of her friends.
