The deceased was born near Churchtown, County Derry, Ireland, in December, 1763, and was married to John Nichol in 1784, with whom she emigrated to America in 1789, first settling in Cumberland Co., Pa., whence the family removed to Westmoreland Co., Pa., thence to Colerain Tp., Belmont Co., Ohio, of which she was a resident upwards of fifty-five years. Few persons live so long or have so large a number of descendants. She was the mother of fifteen children, of whom twelve came to maturity. Her grandchildren number one hundred and one; her great grandchildren one-hundred and seventy-two; and her great-great grandchildren eight, making her posterity two-hundred and ninety-six. Of these many are still living and are residents of Ohio, Illinois Iowa and California. She made a profession of religion in Ireland, and in her various changes of residence in America showed that she valued the privileges of the people of God. Her last connection was with the Associate Reform Presbyterian Congregation of St. Clairsville; and as long as her strength permitted she was “glad when they said, Let us go up to the house of the Lord.” She had the pleasure of seeing all her children and many of their children member of the church of the living God. As she enjoyed many blessings and privileges in life, she was favored with freedom from suffering in death. There was a gradual decline of strength and one day departure from this world, assure hope, to the enjoyment of a blissful eternity; having experienced the fulfillment of the promise – “Thou shalt see thy children’s children, and peace on Israel.” May her numerous descendents be partakers of her hope, and enjoy the answer to her prayers on their behalf.
