Annie Kate (Poppen) Mennenga, daughter of Poppe and Mamie (Ammerman) Poppen, was born September 6, 1917 in Hamlin County, South Dakota. She spent her early years and received her education in rural school in Hamlin County and was united in marriage to Lewis P. Mennenga on November 3, 1940 at Lake Benton, Minnesota. They farmed near Dempster, South Dakota until retiring and moving into Estelline in 1977. She entered the Estelline Nursing and Care Center on February 22, 2010 and died there on Sunday, May 8, 2011 at the age of 93 years, 8 months and 2 days. She was a member of the United Church of Christ in Estelline and was a past member of the Dempster Reformed Church until it closed. She was involved in the Dorcus Society while in Dempster and was also a member of the local birthday and card clubs. She enjoyed gardening, playing cards, cooking for family gatherings, was an avid Minnesota Twins fan and in her later years enjoyed watching The Young and the Restless and Wheel of Fortune. Grateful for having shared her life are two sons, LaVerne Mennenga and his wife Linda of Castlewood, Dale Mennenga and his friend Tonya of Westfield, WI; four daughters, Judy VanDykhorst of Estelline, Marilyn Greenfield and her husband Roger and Bonnie Henrichsen and her husband William, all of Castlewood, Louann Dahl and her friend Dave Jensen of Brookings; 12 grandchildren; 15 great grandchildren; 1 step great granddaughter; 1 step great great grandson; one sister Lena Markwardt of Freeport, IL; and a host of other relatives and friends. Annie was preceded in death by her husband Lewis on February 22, 2001; her parents; one infant daughter; one infant grandson; one great grandson; one son-in-law Edward VanDykhorst; one grandson-in-law Douglas Zafft; four brothers and five sisters.
