Committal of the ashes was made at Forest Home cemetery. Laura Bowman Galer was born May 12, 1877, at Carroll, Iowa, the daughter of Truman Lewis and Anna Hubbard Bowman. Her father was a teacher, editor and land agent, and her grandfather was a preacher, one of the early Methodist circuit-riders. She graduated from Roxbury (Boston, Mass.) high school and attended Mt. Holyoke, Iowa State Teachers, and Radcliffe colleges, receiving degrees in education and philosophy at the last two institutions. She was valedictorian of the Class of 1904 at Radcliffe, of which Helen Keller was also a member. She received a Phi Beta Kappa Key for her scholastic achievements. After nine years on the faculty of Iowa State Teachers College, she studied at Ryder Divinity School, and was ordained as a Universalist minister in 1911. For many years she served that denomination in the field of religious education. In recognition of that service she received an honorary degree of Doctor of Divinity from Meadville Theological School. On July 1, 1912, she was married at Wellesley Hills, Mass., to Roger S. Galer, attorney of Mt. Pleasant, who served as president of the Universalist General convention and as trustee of Lombard College and Meadville Theological School. She resided with her husband at Mt. Pleasant until his death, December 27, 1950. In 1952 she went to California and in November 1953, moved into a room at The Altenheim, in Oakland, where she passed away on Feb. 6, 1956. A brother, John H. Bowman of San Francisco, Calif., two nephews, Capt. William Bowman of Chester, N. J., and Roger Magoun of Worcester, Mass., and her sister-in-law, Mrs. Queen Galer Allen of Des Moines survive her, together with her step-grandchildren, Ben and Roger Galer of Mt. Pleasant, and Betty Wagner of Clarence, N. Y. The Rev. Laura B. Galer was a leading minister in her Church, and last summer she served as guest preacher at the First Unitarian church of Berkeley, Calif. She and her husband wrote extensively for church papers, and taught one of the earliest Sunday School institutes, which they organized at Ryder House in Chicago in 1919. She was pastor of the Universalist church in Mt. Pleasant from 1922 until shortly before the federation of that church and the Congregational church. While visiting in Mt. Pleasant last November she preached her last sermon in the Federated church. She was active in social work, a friend and helper to those in need. She often preached at Mitchellville, Iowa, and visited the State Reformatory for Girls there. Not only distinguished in the pulpit, she also was in constant demand as a speaker throughout the State of Iowa, and appeared at religious and youth institutes in other states. She had the rare ability of bringing to life the characters and places about which she talked, and to express in beautiful language the noblest thoughts. Her evening picture sermons and Christmas eve candlelight services at the Universalist church in Mt. Pleasant will be treasured by all who enjoyed them, just as her life of service enriched the lives of so many.
