Bethea Good Woman Passes To Her Reward After A Long Illness. It will be a matter of regret to many to learn of the death of Mrs. Annie M. Bethea, who passed away Thursday morning at the residence of her daughter, Mrs. W. T. Bethea, after a lingering illness of several months. Mrs. Bethea was the eldest daughter and the second eldest child of Rev. Joel and Nancy Allen and was born in the Brownsville section of Marlboro County, October 22, 1843. A few years before the War between the States her father moved to the "Free State" section of Marion County and here reared and settled his family around him. Soon after the war she was married to Dr. Andrew Bethea, a physician of the same section, where he settled and practiced his profession. There they began life auspiciously but their plans were soon cut short by the sudden death of her husband. Mrs. Bethea was thus left alone with five children, but struggled on heroically and reared them on the farm and educated them. After they had reached maturity she gave up housekeeping and for several years had been living with her children in different parts of the State, all of whom are now living to mourn her death, and are located as follows: Mrs. P. F. Kilgo, Greenville; Mrs. W. T. Bethea, Dillon; H. A. Bethea, Latta; Dr. P. A. Bethea, Darlington; and Ex-Lieut. Gov. A. J. Bethea of Columbia. Besides her children, she is survived by the following brothers and sisters: W. B. Allen, Latta; the Rev. J. I. Allen, Dillon; D. E. Allen, Hartsville; Mrs. J. F. Allen, Mallory; and Mrs. P. S. Dew, Latta. Early in her childhood she united with the Brownsville Baptist Church and was a member of the Baptist church at the time of her death. She was a lovable character and had many friends who with a large family connection mourn her loss. The services were held at 11 o'clock Friday morning, at the residence of her daughter, Mrs. W. T. Bethea, being conducted by the Rev. W. C. Allen, pastor of the First Baptist Church and the Rev. S. J. Bethea, pastor of the Little Rock Methodist Church. The interment was made at Dothan cemetery where she was laid away beside the grave of her husband who passed away many years ago.
