Mrs. O'Connell, who had suffered a paralytic stroke Wednesday morning, had been in declining health the past three years and bedfast since last December. She had seemed to be improving recently and was feeling unusually well and cheerful at the time she was stricken, so her sudden death came as a great blow to her loved ones and friends. Annie Ruth Barry, daughter of Bart and Mary Hagerty Barry, was born March 10, 1880, at Neola, Iowa. With her family she moved to Danbury in early childhood, and there she received her education, made her first communion, and was confirmed in the Catholic faith, of which she was a devout member and faithful worker all her life. On January 29, 1902, Annie Barry became the bride of John J. O'Connell at Danbury and they began farming about five miles southeast of Anthon. One son, William F., was born to them. The family has resided two miles south of Anthon since 1934. Eight years ago Mrs. O'Connell's young niece, Patricia Murphy, came to make her home with them after the sudden death of her parents, and upon her Mrs. O'Connell bestowed the care and affection of a mother. During her long illness Patricia cared for her aunt skillfully and tenderly, but the ministrations of her family were unavailing, and she answered the call of the Master May 12, 1944. Surviving in addition to the widower John, a son, William F., and her niece, Patricia Murphy, all of Anthon, are two brothers, Patrick and Michael Barry of Danbury; a half-sister, Mrs. V.J. Knorr of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; two half-brothers, Jack Murphy of Sioux City and James Murphy of North Dakota; nieces, nephews, and other relatives. Her parents and three brothers, Francis and Tom Murphy and Bart Barry, preceded her in death. Mrs. O'Connell was blessed with a cheery, kindly disposition and a talent for spreading joy and happiness among those who knew her. She was ever a devoted friend, a kind neighbor, and generous with her time and gifts to her church, where she served in many ways for years. She was president of the Altar Society for a number of years and made a beautiful service flag for St. Joseph's church. None sought her help and was turned away without comfort, so great was her capacity for friendship, and so soundly was her Christian faith a part of her everyday life. She will be missed greatly, not only by her family, but by a wide circle of friends and acquaintances whose lives have been brightened by her having lived. Requiem mass was sung at 9:30 a.m. Monday in St. Joseph's Catholic Church by Rev. A. Conlon, pastor, and burial was in Mt. St. Joseph's Cemetery. The pallbearers, all neighbors or former neighbors of the O'Connells, were Wilbert Walters, Carl Smith, T.H. Petersen, Jeff O'Connell, James O'Shaughnessy and John Carr. Hudgel's Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
