Description	:	Although her gravestone gives her year of birth as 1883, Annie Cecelia Shugrue was probably born in Norwich, Connecticut, in July or August of 1879 as she is an infant in the 1880 census. Her parents were John J. Shugrue and Ellen Connell, sometimes called O'Connell. After her mother's death in 1894, teen-age Annie kept house for her father and siblings at 16 Golden Street. Read More	Although her gravestone gives her year of birth as 1883, Annie Cecelia Shugrue was probably born in Norwich, Connecticut, in July or August of 1879 as she is an infant in the 1880 census. Her parents were John J. Shugrue and Ellen Connell, sometimes called O'Connell. After her mother's death in 1894, teen-age Annie kept house for her father and siblings at 16 Golden Street. After her father died in 1911 and her brother married in 1914, Annie continued to keep house for her sister Margaret. It was said in the family that Annie liked to pass herself off as the youngest, and occasional items in the Norwich Bulletin report her making social visits with different lady friends. At one point she worked for awhile in a lady's dress shop. An item in the Norwich Bulletin, January 24, 1918, p11 noted: "Received Postal from France – Miss Annie Shugrue of Golden Street has received a postal from Thomas Delaney, a cousin, who is somewhere in France. The postal says he is feeling fine and enjoying life." In April 1918, Annie, probably with her sister Margaret, was visiting their cousin Bridget (Sullivan) Sullivan and her family in Providence, Rhode Island when Annie suddenly suffered convulsions associated with a strep throat infection. She died at the home of the Sullivans at 176 Julian on April 29, 1918. Her death record says she was 29; her gravestone implies she was 35; probably she was 39. Her funeral was reported on May 2, 1918 in the Norwich Bulletin: "Miss Annie C. Shugrue – The funeral of Miss Annie C. Shugrue was held from her late home at 16 Golden street Wednesday morning with relatives present from Providence, Westerly and other places. There were many beautiful floral offerings. Rev. J. H. Fitzmaurice was celebrant of a requiem Mass at St. Mary's church. Mrs. J. T. Healey was at the organ and Mrs. T. J. Donovan rendered two hymns. Burial was in St. Joseph's cemetery where Father Fitzmaurice read a committal service at the grave. Undertaker Hourigan had charge of the funeral arrangements." A month after her death, a memorial Mass was said, according to the Norwich Bulletin on May 29, 1918, p7: "Greeneville - Tuesday morning in St. Mary's church a month's mind mass for the late Miss Annie Shugrue was sung. The rector of the church, Rev. J. H. Fitzmaurice, was the celebrant of the mass. There was a good attendance of relatives and friends."
