Unknown Kelly ---------------------------------------------- ...as Joke Kills Iowa Farmer -------- State Probes "Prank" in Death of Dunlap Man During Harvest Another Made Ill Dunlap, Ia., July 27--A state agent was called here today to investigate the death Saturday night of Anson Riesland, 49-year-old farmer. Dr. A. T. Slattery of Woodbine said Riesland died of the effects of croton oil, an animal remedy, put into a bottle of beer, apparently as a practical joke. Leonard Brunner of Dunlap was made ill by the tainted beer, but recovered. Riesland, who leaves a wife and nine children, died after four hours of agony. Riesland was working with a threshing crew Saturday at the farm of Fred Peters two miles south of Dunlap. After work the crew sent to town for beer and sandwiches. Four bottles were brought back, only one of which had been doped with the oil. Got Heavy Dose. "Apparently somebody did it as a practical joke intended for somebody else," said Dr. Slattery. Details of this theory were being worked out by officials investigation the case. The oil had floated to the top of the bottle and when Riesland drank he got the full dose. Brunnel took one mouthful and spit it out. Coroner L. L. Robson made arrangements for an inquest today but delayed it until the state's investigation was completed. To Analyze Beer. A sample of the beer which Riesland is said to have drunk was sent to the University of Iowa laboratory at Iowa City tonight for chemical analysis. Sheriff C. F. Cross, who took the sample, said further action on his part would await the chemist's report. He and State Agent T. F. Lacy of Sioux City spent the afternoon here investigating the matter. No arrests have been made. An unexplained feature of the case developed when the dealer from which the beer allegedly was bought said today he did not handle beer corresponding to the label on the bottle from which Riesland drank. Riesland was buried at Woodbine today. The World-Herald's News Service in the Litchfield (NE) Monitor - Jul 1936 -------------------------------------------- CLEARS UP IOWA POISON MYSTERY Dead Farmer's Neighbor in Story of Beer, Hopper Poison Bottle Logan-- The mystery death of Anson Riesland, Dunlap farmer who died July 25 after drinking from a bottle he thought contained beer was cleared up Wednesday with a statement from William A. Hein, a neighbor farmer, who said the bottle contained liquid grasshopper poison. In a signed statement to William P. Welch, special prosecutor, Hein said he placed two quarts of the liquid grasshopper poison in a dark cave in his home and forgot them. Hein related that he obtained the grasshopper poison at the Farm Bureau district station in Woodbine July 9, placing it in an empty picnic beer bottle. Two weeks later, Hein said, Will Peters, another farmer, purchased a bottle of beer to give to his father, Fred, and placed it the Hein cave. On July 25, when it was decided to serve beer to the threshers on the Peters farm, Hein said he bought four bottles of beer in Dunlap, and took what he thought was a fifth from his cave. The fifth bottle contained the liquid poison, Hein said. Riesland, the first to open the beer, accidentally drank from the poison, Hein said.
