Anthony Gerrit Burgers was born November 6, 1928 on the family farm in Welcome Township, East of Sioux Center, Iowa to Gerrit and Hendrika (Vander Pol) Burgers. Tony was raised on the farm and attended country school. His father died when he was a teenager and Tony left school to help his mother with the farm. He served his country in the United States Army from October 23, 1951 until his honorable discharge on October 2, 1953. Shortly after his discharge, Tony began his career with Zenith-Wincharger in Sioux City. While working at Zenith, Tony met his future wife, Helen Kopecky. Tony was united in marriage to Helen on August 10, 1965 at the Little Brown Church, Nashua, Iowa. The couple made their home in Le Mars. Tony continued working at the plant until it closed in the early 1980's. He then worked for Mid-Sioux Opportunities for a few years and later for the City of Le Mars, Parks Department. He had also worked part-time as a security guard for Well's Dairy. Tony loved to work on his acreage and caring for his animals. He provided eggs to several neighbors and friends throughout the years. He will be remembered as a very helpful and independent man. The love of his life, Helen, passed away on December 29, 2008. Tony is survived by a sister, Winnie Kamminga of Crescent, Iowa; several nieces and nephews: Gary Burgers of Hawarden, IA, Erma (Dennis) Christensen of Ruthven, IA, Marilyn (Bob) Top of Palisade, NE, MaryAnn (Kelly) Zinnel of Hawarden, IA, Judy (Harvey) Ferris of Missouri Valley, IA, Harriet (Brad) Ferris of Minden, IA, Wilda McDaniel of Denison, IA, Beth (Randy) Denten of Crescent, IA, and Janet (Doug) Davis of Crescent, IA; and several great nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife; a brother, Henry (Mary) Burgers; and a brother-in-law, Arnold Kamminga.
