He was born Dec. 29, 1921, in Roland, Iowa. He was a member of the Army National Guard and was called to active duty with the 34th Division before the bombing of Pearl Harbor. He transferred to the 11th Airborne Division, serving in the New Guinea invasion of the Philippines and the occupation of Japan. He was also awarded the Bronze Star in the Philippines.
