Gosselin's aunt, Mother Bernard (Gosselin) founded the Sisters of St. Joseph in Eureka about 59 years ago. The Gosselin family are long active members of St. Bernard's Catholic church and for many years Gosselin has supported the promotion of annual retreats at the Jesuit Retreat House in Los Altos, for the men of northern California. He was honored in 1959 when he was named a Knight of St. Gregory the Great by His Holiness Pope John XXIII. Civic Leader An enthusiast for more and better highways Gosselin served for several years on the Highway Commission of the Eureka Chamber of Commerce and the state Chamber of Commerce of which he is still a member. He received honors and citations from many public figures, including President Richard Nixon and Governor Ronald Reagan. He was instrumental in the promotion of the Humboldt Bay Municipal Water District which was formed in 1956 at which time he was elected as a director of the district. He recently resigned from the board of directors after serving for 15 years. Many Affiliations His affiliations include Eureka Notary club, American Legion, Elks club, Ingomar club, the Knights of Columbus and the Society of St. Vincent de Paul. After serving the local Knights of Columbus in various offices, he served as district deputy for five terms and as state deputy of the organization for the term of 1958-59 having previously served the State Council as state membership chairman, state treasurer and state secretary. He was active in the Eureka Volunteer Fire Department and during World War II he was chief of the Eureka Fire Department for two terms. A veteran of World War I, he came to Eureka to make his home after his discharge from the U. S. Navy in February, 1919. He was employed in a local automobile agency until 1927 when he entered the service station and tire business and later acquired the International Harvester Franchise for trucks and tractors. In 1954 he retired from business and has since devoted his time to various charitable and community projects.
