Kunzman, 90, of Albion passed away on Thursday, June 22, 2017, at the Boone County Health Center in Albion. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Albion, with the Rev. Mark Tomasiewicz officiating. Burial will be in St. Michael’s Catholic Cemetery at Albion, with Military Rites conducted by American Legion Post 162 and VFW Post 736 of Albion, along with the American Legion Riders. Levander Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Anthony Joseph Kunzman, the son of Anton and Florence (Hoefer) Kunzman, was born on July 18, 1926, in Albion. He attended District 7 and graduated from Albion High School in 1943. He was the senior class president. In 1945 Tony enlisted in the Army and was sworn in on the day Germany surrendered, May 7, 1945. When the bomb was dropped on Hiroshima on Aug. 6, 1945, he was on a 24-hour march. Tony was with the 3rd Army Division and the 221st MP company stationed in Osaka, Japan. He was honorably discharged on Dec. 8, 1946. After leaving the service, Tony farmed for several years and worked part-time at Coast-to-Coast. In 1953 Tony was united in marriage to Mildred “Billie” Brown at the St. Edward Catholic Church in St. Edward. To this union four children were born: Julie, Douglas, Steven, and Jane. Billie died in 1976. Tony was a mail carrier in Albion on a city route for 38 years and retired in 1989. He also helped his brother Ed at Fairview Lanes bowling alley for several years until it was sold, and coached Little League baseball for 14 years. On May 12, 1989, he married Karen Feye Engelbart at the St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Albion. Following his retirement, Tony worked for Cargill and mowed the golf course at the Albion Country Club. Tony has been a lifetime member of the St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Albion. He has served as Church Council president, Country Club president, VFW member, Grand Knight for the Knights of Columbus and a color guard member. He ran the chain at the football games in Albion for over 30 years. Tony was also a committee member for Relay for Life for five years. In 2010 he and his wife, Karen, received the “Good Neighbor Award” and were Boone County parade Grand Marshals for the fair parade. In November 2012, he received the “Living Veterans Award.” Tony was an avid Husker fan and was known to listen to games on a radio with headphones during his children’s and grandchildren’s weddings. Tony loved to play softball, baseball, bowling and golf. He also enjoyed fishing year around. Tony is survived by his wife, Karen, of Albion; six children, Julie (Brian) Rasmussen of Albion, Douglas (Annette) of Lincoln and Steven of Grand Island, daughter-in-law Colleen Kunzman of Grand Island, Jane (Craig) Little of Lincoln, Debra (Andy) VonSeggern-Johnson of North Bend and Thad (Shelby) Engelbart of Inez, Texas; a brother, Jack (Marion) Kunzman of Albion; a sister-in-law, JoAnn Kunzman of Albion; a brother-in-law, Ken (Susan) Feye of Muskego, Wis.; 13 grandchildren, Michelle (Brandon) Moser of Waverly, Leslie (Brian) Carder of Omaha, Gabriella, Courtney and MacKenzie Kunzman of Grand Island, Brett and Trevin Little of Lincoln, Adam (Brandi) Anderson of Beemer, Bryce (Rebeka) Anderson of North Bend, Jordan VonSeggern of North Bend, Brittany (Kyle) Noak of Inez, Texas, Tyler Engelbart of Inez, Texas, Nichole (Casey) Sok of Blair and Sierra Johnson of North Bend; eight great-grandchildren; along with family on Billie’s side of the family, sisters-in-law Molly Prothman, Marion Finlayson, Janice Bailey and Carol Fitzner; brothers-in-law Joe Brown and Tom Brown; along with many other relatives and friends. Tony was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Mildred; an infant daughter; a daughter-in-law, Mary Kunzman; brothers, Francis and Edward; and sisters, Dolores, Rita, Joan, Teresa and Monica.
