Jones. He was enlisted in Company C., in the 14th Regiment, under the Illinois Cavalry. Two thousand soldier were called. He served under Sherman in the Atlanta Camp for over two years. Then, in 1863 he was mustered into the United States Service. When A.K. Jones entered the war, he weighed 140 lbs.; while in service --- 160. On August 2, 1864 he was captured in the Stoneman raid, led by General Stoneman, later governor of California. He was taken to Andersonville prison, where he was held for nine months. The prison conditions at the time were terrible. He had no shoes, no hat and very few clothes. There were 35,000 prisoners. They were required to march 30 miles on one ear of corn. and the graybacks were so bad, it was exceedingly difficult to sleep. As Mr. Jones described it: "We would take our shirts and hold them over the fire to kill the graybacks, so that we could sleep at night." When released he weighed 65 pounds. Exhaused, weak and so thin from starvation that he was nothing but skin and bones, he trudged the weary miles to Morrison, Illinois where his brother, Joh, lived. He was so weak that he couldn't stoop over and wash his own feet. After that rigorous experience, he settled in Dixon, Illinois. There he worked in a barrel factory, being a cooper by trade. He was married in Dixon, to Eva Gephart, to whom their first chid was born, but died shortly after. A son James, was born to them the next year. When he moved to Dunlap in 1868, A.K. traveled in a covered wagon, while his wife followed by train. They settled on the old Dunham place. In 1871 he purchased the farm....8 miles southeast of Dunlap. At Dunlap, Eva bore him 2 daughters and 2 sons, Lizzy (Connelly), Lavina (Emmert), Henry and Jahon W. (Jack). His wife died April 9, 1893. Four years later he married Tessa Park. She had two chilren by her first husband --- Frank and Anna. INFORMATION SOURCE: Harrison County Iowa History Book Published 1981 Page 122 "Clifford Connelly") Anthony K Jones was a Civil War veteran and was held prisoner in the infamous Andersonville Prison, which was located in Andersonville, Georgia. While there he was ill-fed, housed in filthy barracks, and was generally abused by the prison wardens. when he was finally released he was unable to walk. It took some time for him to recuperate but he lived to the ripe old age of 94.
