Read More	From the October 9, 1945, edition of the Dubuque (IA) Telegraph Herald Driver Loses Life As Train Hits Machine Anthony Konzen, 55, Is Killed At Crossing In Dyersville Death struck at a Dyersville grade crossing at 8:20 Tuesday morning when Anthony Konzen, 55, of 401 Bethel street, Dyersville, was killed when his small coupe was hit and carried by a Chicago and Great Western engine and caboose. Multiple injuries, including a broken neck, killed Mr. Konzen outright, Dr. F.S. Leonard, the county coroner, reported after an examination of the remains. Mr. Konzen also received a fractured left arm, fractured left leg, a crushed chest, several fractured ribs and a ruptured lung. Car Carried By Engine The drive-bar on the front of the locomotive rammed into the left side of the machine at the Union street crossing two blocks east of the Great Western station and picked up the light machine, carrying it for several blocks. It was necessary to back up the engine about 200 feet so that the car could be disentangled and the body removed. The machine was a total loss and the crushed and broken body gave every evidence that death was outright, the coroner and sheriff's officers also called to the scene of the tragedy reported. No Sign, Lights Officers said the crossing was unprotected by either a warning light of the usual "Look Out for the Cars" sign. On the other side of the tracks, however, was such a sign, so a driver traveling towards the business section of the town would have been alerted. Mr. Konzen was driving north at the time of the accident. The train crew was composed of Clarence Hardin, Oelwein, engineer; C.L. Dudley, also of Oelwein, fireman; and Herber Juergens, Oelwein, conductor. The engine and caboose were en route from Oelwein to Dubuque to pick up a freight load here. The body was taken to the Steger funeral home, Dyersville, and funeral arrangement will be announced later. Son Killed Similarly The victim was an employee of the Scherrman garage and was on his way to the garage's warehouse across the tracks from the garage when his car was struck. A son, Staff Sgt. Lester Konzen, was killed in a train tragedy a little more than a year ago. He lost his life, with several other airmen, in a crash of two Chicago and Eastern Illinois railroad trains at Terre Haute, Ind., Sept. 14, 1944. Sgt. Konzen had served as a gunner on a B24 bomber in Italy and was on his way to Miami, Fla., for reassignment, after a leave at home, when he lost his life. Born Jan. 23, 1890, at Holy Cross, son of Matt and the late Mrs. Konzen, he attended the parochial schools of Holy Cross and Dyersville. He was a member of St. Francis Xavier church, Dyersville, the Holy Rosary society and the Dyersville council of the Knights of Columbus. Formerly Was Farmer For many years he farmed near Dyersville. Last year he moved to town and had since been working for the garage. Survivors are his wife, the former Rose Klosterman, New Vienna, to whom he was wed Nov. 26, 1918; three daughters, Mrs. John Ernster, Des Moines, and Ramona and Rose Ann, both at home; one son, Howard; his father, Matt Konzen, now 90, Farley; five brothers, Peter, Michael and Theodore, all of Dubuque, Nicholas of Earlville and Frank of Farley; and three sisters, Mrs. Thomas (Kate) Ries, New Vienna, Mrs. Clarence (Mary) Schemmel, Worthington, and Mrs. Peter (Loretta) Tegeler, Farley. He was preceded in death by his mother, one sister and his son Lester.
