Description	:	Graveside rites for Tony Hlavinka, 74, former Timber Lake and McLaughlin resident, were held Wednesday morning, Apr 21, in the Holy Cross cemetery at Timber Lake with Father Dan Juelfs officiating. Mr. Hlavinka had passed away in his sleep at the Dallas, OR, rest home after a brief illness on April 15. Funeral services were held Monday, Apr 19, in St. Philip's Catholic Church in Dallas and a chapel service was held in the Kesling Funeral Chapel at McLaughlin Apr 20. Anthony Hlavinka was born Aug 10, 1901, at Riverton, IL, the son of Benedict and Josephine Stephanee Hlavinka. He was orphaned at an early age. His mother died in a soap-making accident in 1903; and his father died in 1912 of injuries received in a coal mine cave-in. He was cared for by his sister, Mary, until he went to North Dakota to live with his uncle Matt on a ranch near Mott. In 1926 he moved to Timber Lake and worked on the Chalmers ranch, and also operated a dray line in Timber Lake. He married Marie Gamble in 1928 at Timber Lake. They moved to McLaughlin where Tony worked for the county road department. Four years later he went to work for the SD Department of Highways, blading and maintaining Highways 12 and 63. He retired in 1965. His wife passed away in June 1944 leaving him with six sons ranging in age from five years to 15. He moved to Dallas in 1975. Tony was active in baseball, and played on both the Timber Lake and McLaughlin teams; and later coached the McLaughlin Macs. He was a member of the Catholic church, the McLaughlin Senior Citizens, and later the Dallas Senior Citizens. Sons: Donald, Paul, Robert, Leonard, Richard, Raymond.
