The wagon was knocked into splinters. Pelan was thrown about thirty feet and when picked up by the train crew was unconscious. He was taken to Brainard and medical aid summoned. His recovery is very doubtful. - Omaha Bee of Tuesday. Later. - He died Tuesday at 8:45 p.m. Deceased was twenty-four years of age. ''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''' David City News (David City, Nebr.), February 8, 1900, p. 5, col. 4 Another Fatal Accident. Anton Pelan Killed Near Bruno Monday. Accidents to people living at or near Bruno seem to be frequent. Only last week we chronicled the death by accident of a Bruno citizen, and today we have another to mention. Monday while hauling some lumber from the home of his father-in-law, Anton Pelan, who lives about three miles south of Bruno, met with an accident which caused his death in a short time. He had only been married about three months, being a young man about 24 years of age, and the lumber he was hauling was to be used in building himself a house. Dr. Breuer, who was called to Brainard to attend him, gave us the following particulars regarding the accident. Mr. Pelan in crossing the line of the F. E. road between his home and that of his wife's father, was caught by the passenger train going south, the wagon being hit by the engine and completely demolished and the lumber scattered in every direction, Mr. Pelan himself being thrown forty feet or more and a bad fracture in his skull over one ear being made. The team had gotten across the track and escaped injury. The engineer stopped the tram at once, backed to where the accident occurred, and Mr. Pelan was taken aboard the train and taken to Brainard, the horses being tied to a telegraph pole. The place where he was killed we are told, is a dangerous crossing, there being quite a deep cvut, and there are also some small trees or bushes which obscure the track, besides the track makes makes a curve there so that one crossing cannot see a train but a short distance away, and naturally an engineer cannot see the crossing until right upon it, hence has no opportunity to stop. E. & M. V. passenger south bound while crossing the track in a deep cut. The team had just crossed and the wagon was struck square in the center throwing Mr. Pelan about thirty feet. The horses were uninjured. The train stopped and the crew went back and picked up Mr. Pelan and carried him to Brainard unconscious. Dr. Breuer was summoned, but he died before the Dr. arrived.
