He was the son of Johann and Johanna Holzher Rau. Anton and his fiancee, Maria Eberhard, (7/4/1829~3/25/1879) emigrated to America and landed in New York May 12, 1851, and continued on to LaPorte, Indiana, where they were married. He was the son of Johann and Johanna Holzher Rau. Anton and his fiancee, Maria Eberhard, (7/4/1829~3/25/1879) emigrated to America and landed in New York May 12, 1851, and continued on to LaPorte, Indiana, where they were married. In the summer of 1852, their child Mary (married Michael Frey) was born. Maria's parents, Michael and Catherine Meyer Eberhard, and their children Krescenz, Michael, Peter and Andreas left Bavaria, arriving in New York on June 22, 1852. They met Anton and Maria in Indiana and all moved to Clayton County , Iowa that summer. Anton and Maria bought land near Littleport and began farming. Their other children were born here: Michael (married Mary Lackman); John (married Emma Kords); Tracy (married John Panion); Catherine (1859~1890); Cynthia (married Ferdinand Vehring); Sabina (1862~1885); Anna (married Joseph Schwartz); Joseph (1868~1885). Maria and Joseph are buried in Elkport, Iowa. Catherine and Sabina are buried in Westphalia. When Westphalia was being settled in 1875, Anton sold all his land in Clayton County and bought 200 acres four miles northeast of Westphalia. Michael Rau bought that farm from his father in 1882. Anton retired in Westphalia and married Josephine Rosenthal on October 12, 1891. He died April 12, 1892. He and his other five children are buried in Westphalia. Josephine died July 5, 1927, and is buried in St. Mary's Cemetery, Panama. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *
