Description	:	Anton Vavrik was born in Nemcice, Moravia (south of Ivancice, west of Brno), 11 Jun 1850, to John and Marie Vavrik. He had two sisters, Anna (Mrs. Karel Jelinek) and Marie (Mrs. Vognar), and one brother, John. He lost his father at age five and his mother remarried Kliebl. To the Kliebls, two daughters were born. Anton worked at the International Exhibition at Vienna in 1873 as a cabinet-maker and carpenter. After coming to the United States (about 1876) he spent some time working in St. Paul, Minnesota, where he did some work for James J. Hill, the railroad tycoon. Through Anton's work for Mr. Hill, they became good friends. On occasion Anton was invited to the Hill home to play cards, a fact that he was very proud of. While in St. Paul, he lived with the Borovansky's and the Burianek's. A few years later he went to work in the Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin area. There he met and married Marie Hlina at Eastman, Wisconsin. Anton and his wife Marie were part of a group preparing to leave Prairie du Chien by wagon train in 1881. The Frantisek Rumreich family stayed at the Hlina home while final preparations were made. It was decided that Marie and their infant son, Mike, would follow a year later by train. The wagon train headed for Mitchell, South Dakota where it was decided that it was too dry. The Rumreichs and Anton separated from the wagon train to go to North Dakota. Anton homesteaded (a tree claim; you had to plant trees and stay a certain length of time) two miles east of Pisek. The Koukal homestead was to the east (they were already there), the Anton Schnedar homestead to the north (came later). The Ullman homestead was north of the Koukal homestead and east of the Schnedar homestead. The homesteaders were lonely. Anton was digging a well when he heard a voice calling, "Antonin, are you down there?" Anton was so excited that he propped himself on the shovel and jumped out of the hole he was digging without bothering to use the ladder. He was surprised to see his friend, Anton Schnedar, in North Dakota. Later, Mr. Schnedar loved to tell this story. Anton and Marie had seven children; Matthias or "Mike", Anton, Adolph, Mary, John, Rose and Ralph. A sod house was built near the trees closest to the road. Before Anton had oxen or horses, he walked to Grand Forks for supplies. In those very early days buffalo chips served as fuel, and rags dipped in tallow or lard burning in a saucer served for lighting. Time was told by the sun, and every morning the hour glass was set. The grass was so high that they worried about the children getting lost and they were afraid of prairie fires occurring. Anton farmed and also made use of his trade—making furniture and coffins as requested. While the children were small, he bought the farm north of Pisek. The children's greatest concern was to move their treasures consisting of an old cracked vase and spools (their toys). Later this farm was called "Vavrikville" or "Little Chicago" because there were so many buildings. Anton sold lots of the farm and about half of what is now the town of Pisek stands on the southeast corner of this farm. The Pisek-Lankin road to the south, the Pisek-Park River road to the east and the Z.C.B.J. Cemetery to the west formed its borders. Mrs. Mary Zdenek, his neice, still lived in the southeast corner (1980). Anton also donated land for the K.D. Hall. His home was used for township elections. Marie fed many hungry men who stopped for a meal while walking the railroad tracks. The children were taught by Mr. Peleska and Mr. Hovorka. Mary and Rose were members of the church choir. The boys played in the band. By working together, the family owned about seven farms in the area. Anton and Marie retired from farming about 1912. Anton died 16 Dec 1922, at age 72, and Marie died 19 Apr 1927, at age 68. They are buried next to each other in St. John Nepomucene's Catholic Cemetery in Pisek, North Dakota.
