Mrs. Elizabeth Montgomery, daughter of Andy Snyder, formerly of Hagers Grove, and sister of Night Watchman Pres Snider of this city, committed suicide in Shelbina Sunday. After dressing her two children, a boy and a girl, and sending them to Sunday School she went to the wood shed, stood upoi a stick of wood, while she tied a rope, one end around a rafter, the other around her neck. She then kicked the stick from under her and was found later by neighbors dead swinging to the rafter. The Clarence Courier, Clarence, Missouri, 03 Mar 1909, Wed • Page 1, Column 4 Woman Commits Suicide Mrs. Elizabeth Montgomery committed suicide Sunday morning at her home in the northeast part of town by hanging. She dressed her two children, a girl and a boy, 14 and 12 years old respectively, and sent them to Sunday school, telling them to hurry home and to go to her sisters for dinner. When the little girl came home she could not find her mother and inquired for her at a neighbor's. A few moments later her screams brought neighbors to see what the trouble was. The child had found her mother hanging by a rope in the summer kitchen. She had stood on a stick of wood while adjusting short rope over a joist and the other end about her neck, then kicked the wood away. Her toes touched the floor and her knees were bent to keep her weight off the floor. She had talked to her children about killing herself the night before, saying she had nothing to live for. She was suing her husband, Oscar Montgomery, for divorce and domestic troubles are assigned as the cause of her death. She was previously married to a man by the name of Hatfield from whom she was divorced and the children were born to this marriage. They are well behaved and intelligent, and especially the little girl, seemed very much shocked and terrified at the tragedy of their mother's death. Coroner McGee came down from Clarence and viewed the body. He was satisfied that it was a case of suicide, so impaneled no jury. — Shelbina Democrat.
