Description	:	Civil War Veteran Private, Co. C, 18th Massachusetts Infantry Private, Co. D, 4th Massachusetts Cavalry Arad Thomas, Jr. was the son of Arad and Susan R. (Vail) Thomas. Arad was a 17 year-old Farmer from Middleboro, MA, when he enlisted at Cambridge, MA on Nov. 6, 1861, being recruited by Capt. William S. McFarlin, and was mustered into the 18th Mass. C, 18th Massachusetts Infantry Private, Co. D, 4th Massachusetts Cavalry Arad Thomas, Jr. was the son of Arad and Susan R. (Vail) Thomas. Arad was a 17 year-old Farmer from Middleboro, MA, when he enlisted at Cambridge, MA on Nov. 6, 1861, being recruited by Capt. William S. McFarlin, and was mustered into the 18th Mass. Infantry on Jan. 14, 1862 as a Private in Co. C. He was discharged due to disability on Sept. 25, 1862. He enlisted for a second time with Co. D of the Fourth Regiment Mass. Cavalry on Jan. 4, 1864 and was mustered on Jan. 9, 1864. Arad was taken as a Prisoner of War at Gainesville, Florida on Aug. 17, 1864 and held at the Florence Stockade in South Carolina until exchanged at N.E. Ferry near Wilmington, NC on Feb. 28, 1865. After receiving initial medical treatment at Camp Parole in Annapolis, MD, he was transferred to the U.S. General Hospital at Readville, MD from where he was discharged on Aug. 17, 1865 S.O. War Department. Following his military service Arad resided at Middleboro, MA. He married Elizabeth Ayles, who was born May 18, 1839 in England, on August 7, 1870. Per the 1880 U.S. Census, Arad and Elizabeth, aka "Lizzie", resided at Watertown, MA, where he was employed as an Iron Moulder. Arad was a member of the Joseph W. Collingwood G.A.R. Post No.76, Plymouth. Elizabeth Thomas died in Middleboro on March 18, 1900. Arad, who was 65 years of age when he died at Middleboro, was interred beside his wife at the Thomastown Cemetery, Middleboro.
