Read More	Archibald Bryson, the subject of this sketch, was born in Bedford County, Pennsylvania, August 27, 1813, and came with his parents to Ames Township, Athens County, Ohio, in the autumn of 1816. His father, David Bryson, a pious and industrious man procured a tract of land near the center of the township where he reared his family of six children, two sons and four daughters. Archibald, the eldest son, bore his full share of the toil and hardships necessary to clear the land and support the family. When five years old he was lost for several hours in the woods, during which time he wandered a distance of several miles. He obtained a fair education for those early times and was during his entire life a great reader, being particularly fond of historical works. He possessed an excellent memory and while always giving due respect to the opinions of others, he was unswerving in his own convictions. He was strictly honest and straightforward in all his dealings, never seeding public honor or personal favor. In habits he was strictly temperate, abhorring the use of liquor or tobacco in any form. Physically he was strong and athletic. When twenty-one years of age he became the owner of a good farm from his father's tract, which was a lifelong home for him and his faithful companion when he chose a year later in the person of Miss Henrietta Davis, who was born near Lake George, New York, February 15, 1814 and came with her mother and only brother to Ames township in early childhood. Her early life was fraught with hardships of the severest kind, but amidst them all she developed a character of true worth and Christian piety. She possessed a mind of rare ability and a nature of tenderest sympathy. She was an excellent reader and amidst all her domestic duties found time to acquire a good knowledge from the best of books, which together with her excellent judgment made her life of inestimable worth to both children and grandchildren. She was married to Archibald Bryson on October 11,1835, and they moved at once to their farm home, where for a period of nearly sixty years they lived and shared together the joys and sorrows of domestic life. They were blessed with twelve children, seven sons and five daughters. the eldest son, a teacher of bright prospects, died at the age of twenty with fever. One son was accidentally killed by a falling tree; a son and a daughter died almost simultaneously with flux, and one daughter died in infancy. Of those who grew to manhood and womanhood three have since died, namely: David, John and Ida. Those still living are Maurice, George, Fanny and Jane. The latter remained at home with her parents as long as they lived, and now resides in Amesville. Mrs. Bryson died August 1, 1895, aged eighty-one years, five months, and sixteen days. Archibald Bryson died March 27, 1902, aged eighty-eight years and seven months. The old home has since been occupied by their grandson, George l.
