Borland, a Spanish American veteran and one of the oldest citizens born in Sterling, died at 3:14 a.m., Friday, May 14, 1954 at the age of 73 years, 6 months and 12 days. Arch J., son of W.M. and Angeline Borland, was born in Sterling, Nebr., on Nov. 2, 1880 and spent most of his life in Sterling. At an early age he enlisted in the service of his country and served for a period of two years. He was united in marriage to Anna Marie Miller on July 2, 1902 at Liberty, Nebr. To them were born six children, James, Wallace, Marjorie, Mabel, Edith and Lois. Mrs. Borland died March 22, 1928; Wallace died in 1950 and James in 1951. Mr. Borland learned the blacksmith trade from his father and worked at that trade most of his life. He was a member of Sterling Lodge No. 70 A.F. & A.M., and served in various capacities in that Order. During the last three years Mr. Borland's health had been failing. On March 3 he suffered a stroke of paralysis and on March 4 was taken to Veterans hospital at Lincoln, where he remained until his death. Mr. Borland was a kind and loving husband and father and had a host of friends. Surviving are his wife, Edna; four daughters, Mrs. Mabel Baker of Ogallala; Mrs. Marjorie Williams of Los Angeles, Calif.; Mrs. Lois Sorenson of Seattle, Wash.; Mrs. Edith Huenink of Lincoln; one brother Bert of Kearney, and one sister Ethel of Corpus Christi, Texas; also 10 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Funderal services were held Monday afternoon at 1 o'clock in the Zink funeral home, Sterling, with Rev. E. B. Stewart in charge. Miss Augusta Joekel, Rev. and Mrs. Stewart sang "Lead Kindly Light" and "Sunrise." Pallbearers were H. Dale Park, Gus Warnke, Lynn Gaines, E.R. Lambert, Harry Gandee and James Chiles. Burial was in the cemetery at Liberty.
