Gilchrist, a son of Daniel and Mary Gilchrist, was born at Jedora Harbor, Nova Scotia, September 11, 1875. He was one of 14 children of whom only five are yet living, his parents and eight brothers and sisters having preceded him in death. When about 8 years of age, he came with his parents and their family to Central City, Iowa, where he has since made his home, receiving his education in the schools of Central City. On June 18, 1906, he was united in marriage to Miss Nettie Bateman, establishing a home here where they have since lived, Mr. Gilchrist engaging in business. When a child he was baptised in the Congregational church of Nova Scotia. He was also a member of the I.O.O.F. lodge No. 235 of Central City. Mr. Gilchrist, owing to his kind ways and fine disposition, was able to make and hold friends so that practically all who knew him were his friends. He will be greatly missed and mourned by friends and relatives, and his much loved companion. He had been in failing health for a number of years, and on Thursday evening, December 17, he suffered a stroke of paralysis which, with other complications hastened the end so that death came, peacefully Sunday evening, December 20th, at about 6:30, he being at this time, 50 years, 3 months and 9 days of age. There survive to mourn their loss, besides a loving wife, 4 brothers and 1 sister; W.E. Gilchrist, Gettysburg, South Dakota; John H. Gilchrist of Cloquet, Minnesota; D.M. Gilchrist of Fargo, North Dakota, Artie A. of Page, North Dakota; Mrs. Mary Loomis, his sister, of Sterling, North Dakota, and many other relatives and a host of friends. While we do not understand why some are called and others are not, we bow in humble submission to the will of God who doeth all things wisely and well. Funeral services were held from the residence on Wednesday afternoon, Rev. C.V. Lannhelm of Edgewood, officiating. Music was furnished by a quartet composed of E.A. Phelps, Verne Phelps, Ray Fish and Kent Fish. Interment at Oak Hill.
