He died Tuesday, Nov. 10, 2015, at Faith Regional Health Services in Norfolk. --- Arden Emerson Smith was born on Feb. 10, 1928, in Norfolk, the son of Daniel and Gertrude (Schaecher) Smith. He worked briefly for the Chicago and Northwestern Railroad and also for the International Harvester dealership in Norfolk. Arden married Doris (Zohner) Aldag on July 12, 1952, in Yankton. In 1952, he went to work for the Elkhorn Rural Public Power. Arden worked as a lineman and was promoted to underground foreman, and then to operations manager until his retirement in 1992. Arden was a 55-year member of the Battle Creek Volunteer Fire Department. He was very active in the fire department, attending many hours of education and training and also promoting legislation for the Nebraska State Volunteer Firefighters Association along with many members from surrounding departments and statewide. He is survived by his spouse, Doris; two sons, Dennis Aldag and his spouse, Janice (Carstens) of Battle Creek and Scott Smith and his spouse, Joanie (Mozer) of Norfolk; four grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; eight great-great-grandchildren; four brothers, Chester “Buck” Smith of Neligh, Danny “Pete” Smith of Battle Creek, Ronald Smith of Battle Creek and Barry Smith of Arizona; and three sisters, Margaret “Peg” Boyer of Battle Creek, Mamie Prochaska and Sandy Davis, both of Oregon. Arden was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Darold Smith, Donald “Goog” Smith and Jack Smith; two sisters, Darlene “Dee” Oliver and Brenda Graber; and one grandson, Gregory Smith.
