Her skin was golden brown, her eyes were green, and she was thin and stooped when I first knew her. Mother told me that when she was a child, Grandma had thick, long, wavy hair that hung down her back nearly to her ankles. The children loved it and cried if she mentioned cutting it shorter. It took a long time for her to wash it in a basin on the porch, so I'm sure shorter hair would have made that job easier. Grandma and Grandpa had a vegetable garden, chicken house, and sometimes a pig pen. They were poor, so she was frugal in her ways. She made her clothes out of feed sacks, canned and froze vegetables, fed the hogs left-over food, and heated the water in a kettle on the stove. In the 1950's, women picked out their animal feed by the design of the fabric used for the sacks. Three sacks of the same kind of fabric would be enough to make a dress. Companies competed to have the prettiest fabric since that helped sell their product. I remember Grandma washing clothes before she got a wringer/washer. Her method was a throw-back to an earlier day. Like generations before her, she built a wood fire on the ground around a black cast-iron pot into which were placed the soiled clothes and soap. She stirred the clothes with a long wood pole while standing well back from the fire. After a while, she removed the clothes with the pole and put them in a wash tub for scrubbing on the washboard. Then they were rinsed, rung out, and hung on the clothesline to dry. Their oldest son, George, died as a result of washday. He was on a fence with his slingshot when he lost his balance and fell into the wash pot. In the days before antibiotics, nothing could be done for "blood poisoning" that developed. He was brought home to die. On the night of his death, Grandma was in bed. She told her family that she saw a cloud come down between her room and George's, and on the cloud were two angels. It soon ascended with three angels, so she knew he had died. When we visited, Grandma filled the table with bowls and platters of food. There would be three kinds of meat, at least five bowls of vegetables, hot biscuits, and multiple desserts. Grandpa would say, "This is how poor folks eat." We would protest that we were eating like rich folks. We were urged to eat three or more servings. They showed their love by feeding us vast quantities of food. Grandma was an outgoing person who loved people; but she had difficulty communicating. As a young mother, she had a virus that destroyed most of her hearing. Nothing could be done to restore her hearing, and no hearing aid could help. She could read lips and hear slightly when we spoke loudly. Most of us communicated through her daughter Jackie and Grandpa when he was living. She was a loving grandmother who delighted in showing photographs of her grandchildren and great grandchildren to visitors. She took great pride in having over 30 grandchildren. As the grandchildren began having children the numbers grew large, but she knew the names of all of them. Although she had a hard life, she was blessed in her marriage. Her husband's love for her was visible to everyone. He called her his Beautiful Mommie and was always affectionate towards her.
