He graduated from the Hesston, Kansas Academy in 1955, and followed that with one year at Tabor College in Hillsboro, Kansas. Read More	Arelie Ethan Schmidt, 81 June 23, 1937 ~ December 5, 2018 Arelie was born June 23, 1937 to Frank and Rachel (Jantz) Schmidt in rural Tampa, Kansas. He graduated from the Hesston, Kansas Academy in 1955, and followed that with one year at Tabor College in Hillsboro, Kansas. He was baptized and became a member of the Friedenstal Mennonite Church, rural Tampa, in September of 1957. After college he volunteered for 1-W service at St. Luke’s Hospital in Denver, CO, for 2 years. After that Arelie lived in Aurora, CO, and held several jobs there before his employment with the Colorado Highway Department. He was a Crew Chief of a crew that painted lanes and crosswalks in Metropolitan Denver. Arelie’s crew was one of the only ones using plastic in that endeavor. He retired from that line of work in 2001. In 2004 Arelie moved to Hesston, Kansas and lived in a duplex at Schowalter Villa until his death. Arelie had a few hobbies but mainly loved to hunt and fish. Arelie Ethan Schmidt, 81, died December 5, 2018, at Schowalter Villa in Hesston, Kansas. Left to honor his memory are his brother, Junia Schmidt and wife Doris (Flebeau) of Hesston; nephews, Don Rempel of Kalona BC, Canada, Dave Rempel, Fairbury, NE; nieces, Marilyn (Fred) Root of Holmesville, NE, Laurel (Karl) Louderbaugh of Yates Center, Carol (Monty) John of Chanute, Patricia (Randy) Stauffer of Hesston, Cynthia Payton of Lawrence, and Paula (Troy) Martin of Milford, NE. Arelie was preceded in death by his parents; sister and her husband, Elfrieda and George Rempel; and nephew-in-law, Dave Payton. Memorial service will be 11:00 a.m. Saturday, December 15, 2018, at Schowalter Villa Chapel. Private family inurnment will take place at Peace Valley Cemetery, Durham, Kansas. The family requests that memorials in his name be given to Mennonite Central Committee (MCC) or Schowalter Villa. Note: Hesston Academy was grades 9-12, taught on the same campus as the current Hesston Junior College and part of the (Old) Mennonite Church. At the time he attended, there was chapel every day, a cappella singing (with the beginning aid of a pitch pipe) and most girls wore the white head coverings. Tabor College is a Mennonite Brethren 4-year liberal arts college. Many Mennonites are pacifist, and the I-W classification allowed young men to work for their government obligations instead of being part of the military. There were no GI bonuses, and the pay was minimal. Note: It is unclear whether the plastic referred to was Thermoplastic road marking paint, also called hot melt marking paint.
