Arend Henrich Von Seggern homesteaded 80 acres in Section 10, Cuming Township, Dodge County in 1869. An early history of Dodge County states that Section 10 was homesteaded by Germans in 1869, among them was A. Vanseggan (misspelled). He applied for citizenship in April, 1869. Arend was born April 13, 1842 in Hohenboken, Delmenhorst County, Germany, the son of farm parents. He served in the army reserves from Nov. 1863 - Aug. 1865. Drafted in 1866 he served in Germany's Civil War. In March 1869 he got a furlough to the United States. It is known that one sister Margratha and one brother, Heinrich, also came to the United States. He married Catherine Nabor, December 31, 1872 in Fremont, Nebraska. She was born September 4, 1853 in Oldenburg, Germany and came with her mother, a widow who was hopeful of a better life for her five children. Thirteen children were born to this union: Gerhard Henry, 1873-1949; John Gerhard, 1875-1952; Arnold John, 1876-1947; Gerhardine Catherine (Hilgen), 1878-1950; Meta Margarethe, 1880-1966; Pauline, 1882-1882; John Henry, 1882-1955; Diedrich Gerhard, 1884-1946; Fred John, 1886-1967; Anna Sophie, 1889-1975; Bernard Henry, 1891-1968; Katherine Matilda, 1893-1984; William McKinley, 1898-1909. The older children received their education at rural District 50 in Dodge county. District 83 split off in 1900 and Arend offered to rent one acre of his land for school purposes. The younger children attended this school. The family first attended St. Paul's Lutheran Church, rural Hooper. When St. John's Lutheran (County line) was organized in 1902, Catherine, then widowed, was a charter member. The family home, probably built around 1890 (evidenced by square nails) was a two story frame house with two rooms on each floor. Before 1916 a large kitchen and another bedroom was added. This home was replaced in 1956. As the family grew to maturity and married they each in turn started farming in the Scribner-Hooper area with the exception of two daughters: Meta (husband, Hugo Diedrichson) and Anna (husband, Edward Meier) who moved to western Nebraska. Arend died in 1900, leaving Catherine with minor children and farm responsibilities. With older sons Catherine continued the active management of the farm until 1916 when Bernard married Bertha Havekost, daughter of Gerhard and Catherine (nee Johannes) Havekost who were early settlers in southern Cuming County. Until her death in 1930 Catherine continued to live on the homestead. Under Bernard's care many changes were effected: change in power from horse to tractor, hand to mechanical harvesting of grain, rural electrification and increase in farm size. In 1927 Bernard designed and supervised the building of a large barn (34X64'). The cotton wood lumber used was milled by his brother John. The drouth and depression of the thirties demanded thrift and hard work to provide for the family and maintain the farm unit. Bernard and Bertha were the parents of four children: Melvin, (wife, Doris Weitzenkamp); Clinton, (wife, Mildred Bachman); Bernetta, (husband, Norman Schroeder); Myron, (wife, Lois Von Essen). This family attended District 83 and were graduates of Scribner High School. Upon Bernard's retirement in 1948 his son, Clinton, a World War II veteran, began farming. During those 35 years, the emphasis has been on care of the land through a complete conservation program. Machine and grain storage facilities were modernized to accommodate a cattle feeding and grain operation. Clinton and Mildred are the parents of four children, Suzanne, (husband, David Olson); Marilyn, (husband, Timothy Kohler); Donald (wife, Rebecca George); Glenn. After their marriage in 1983, Donald and Becky made their home on the original homestead, now increased to 560 acres, and as the generations before them, are finding an abundant life in the rolling hills of a norther Dodge County." by Mrs. Clinton Von Seggern
