Arend Olivier, John J. Bomgaars and Douwie Vander Schaaf went to Lake Okoboji early Tuesday evening to do a little fishing. At about 8 p.m. while out in the lake quite a distance, one of the lines became entangled in the propeller of the outboard motor. While trying to free the line Mr. Olivier leaned over and the boat capsized throwing all three men into the water. Mr. Bomgaars was able to hold onto the boat and tried to toss a life preserver to Mr. Olivier but the latter man sank to his death. Mr. Vander Schaaf and Mr. Bomgaars were rescued from the water and Mr. Olivier's body was recovered and resuscitation attempted with a pulmotor, but to no avail. Mr. Bomgaars suffered from exhaustion and Mr. Vander Schaaf was treated for exhaustion and shock. Following the tragedy the survivors returned home, accompanied by Mrs. Olivier and son Keith, who had planned to spend the balance of the week at a cottage at the lakes. Mr. Olivier, an automobile dealer in Hull was about 45 years old, and is survived by his widow and two children. ***** From the Sioux County Index, Hull, (Sioux), Iowa, Thursday, August 16, 1951, Page 1, Column 2: Obituary Of The Late Mr. Arend N. Olivier Arend Olivier was born on a farm near Hull, Iowa, June 8th, 1903, and passed away August 7th, 1951, at the age of 48 years and 2 months. He grew to young manhood on his father's farm; and then came to Hull to work for Bomgaars Brothers Garage, where he continued until he went into business for himself. Since then he was engaged in the Garage and Automobile Sales business in Hull. He was united in marriage to Miss Minnie Schuett on June 8, 1927. To this union three children were born: Carole Joyce (Mrs. Harold Kroese); Donald Bruce (who preceded him in death August 31, 1944 at the age of 11 years); and Keith Duane, age 9. Left to mourn his loss are his widow, Mrs. Minnie Olivier; his children, a little granddaughter, Barbara Dee Kroese; his mother, Mrs.Fannie Olivier at Sioux Center; brothers and sisters, Nellie (Mrs. Al Scholten) of Rock Valley, Arie of Sioux Center, Asa of Grand Rapids, Michigan, Mrs. Anne Haarsma of Sioux Center, and Wilma, Mrs. Bert Duits of Sioux Center. His father, A. W. Olivier preceded him in death in December of 1944. His departure is felt by a host of relatives and friends. Funeral services were held on Saturday afternoon from the First Reformed Church in Hull, with Reverend Chester Droog of Spencer and Reverend William Meinen of Hull conducting the services. Pallbearers were Douwie Vander Schaaf, John Bomgaars, Leonard Gorzeman, Ralph Kooiker, Henry Dahl, Bob Wolfe, Hyman Hymans and Peter Dykstra. Special music included a duet by Mr. and Mrs. Willis Brouwer, "In The Garden", and a quartet, composed of Les Foreman, Geraldine Bush, Dorothea Hymans and Elwin Gunnink, who sang "Some Day We'll Understand".
