During her long, courageous battle with cancer, her strength and faith is what held all of us together with her loving and comforting way. Arla had the same chronological events take place in her life as everyone else, some of which need to be convened. However, who she was as a person, what she stood for, and the legacy she leaves behind is what made her important to this world. Arla was born to John and Monessa Pennington on May 27, 1934 in Townsend, Mont. She attended school in Townsend and spent most of her childhood on a farm on the outskirts of town. She had countless talents in life many of which she didn't see as a talent. For one, she was an amazing cook and always had enough for anyone who just happened to be by for dinner. To her the skill was matter of fact and something in life that was a necessary skill for everyone. However, most people are not able to make something spectacular out of nothing. Wes and Arla met and fell in love in Townsend. Arla's marriage to Wesley was something to be looked at as the ideal. They were happily married for 41 years on July 28. They made their marriage a priority. Arla adored Wes. She instilled in her girls and practiced that a person's mate was the one you are to be devoted to, sacrifice for, and be committed to. In the last part of Arla's life, Wes proved his devotion beyond all expectations. Wes's devotion to Arla in her time of need was so immense that to describe it would be beyond belief for anyone who was not there to see what he undertook. Wes took up where Arla couldn't anymore. He became his wife's and his daughters' 24-hour-a-day cook, coach, cheerleader, friend and confidant. Wes and Arla's unconditional love for each other was an inspiration. One of Arla's greatest pleasures in life was her family. A mother's influence on her children is taken for granted. Many of the things she gifted her daughters with have such early beginnings that it is not given credit for. Here is a short list of things she taught her daughters and really indicates who she was: love and affection, and to use the word love and express your affection. You will notice that her children use the word frequently and mean it. It was made clear at a young age that to say, "I love you" is not a sign of weakness and that affection should be expressed freely and with confidence. She also taught unselfish compassion for and with those close to the family; respect, both to give it and expect it from others; to listen without passing judgment; and responsibility. She managed to raise her daughters as friends while also remaining their leader. She led the way. Her extraordinary ethics, generosity and integrity made it easy for them to know the right thing to do. Not that her example was always followed. But, Arla was always right there to pick them up, and help them understand the error and set them off in the right direction. She saw her daughters' successes in life as much her own as theirs. To friends and extended family Arla was a special person. She was a mom to everyone. She always made time for someone in need. None of us realized the kind of affect she had on so many people's lives over the years until something like what she has been through inspired people to come forward and share their thoughts. They could each describe how her unique blend of honesty, genuine interest, fairness and down-to-earth sense of humor made a difference in their lives. Arla was a bright beacon who stood for virtuous living and standing strong for what was important in lifeŠFamily, Friends and Integrity. Arla is survived by her husband Wesley, two daughters; Shauna and Sharla (Chris Anderson), all of Belgrade, and various brothers, sisters, nieces, nephews, and friends. Arrangements are by Cremation or Funeral Gallery of Belgrade. A graveside service will be held Monday Aug., 25, at 1 p.m. in Sunset Memorial Gardens.
