Description	:	Arla Vivian Schmalz, age 92, passed away at Delta County Memorial Hospital on Tuesday, March 27 surrounded by her loving family. Arla, the third of seven girls, was born to Lela (Ensign) and Ray Lashley on July 27, 1919, at the family homestead in Peach Valley. Read More	Arla Vivian Schmalz, age 92, passed away at Delta County Memorial Hospital on Tuesday, March 27 surrounded by her loving family. Arla, the third of seven girls, was born to Lela (Ensign) and Ray Lashley on July 27, 1919, at the family homestead in Peach Valley. Except for a short stint in Missouri, Arla grew up in the Uncompahgre Valley, graduating with honors from Olathe High School in 1937. She married Joe Schmalz at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Delta on Sept. 29, 1937. As a bride, she became a member of St. Michael's and retained that membership throughout her life. Arla was born to be a mother and a homemaker. She and Joe became parents to nine children, losing one son at birth. Joe passed away Aug. 1, 1984. Arla remarked,"I have a degree as 'Just a Housewife', and I could not have done better than choosing my life with a loving partner, raising children that I dearly love, growing up with good parents, sisters, grandparents, aunts, uncles and good friends. I could not have had a better life." Arla had many varied interests and collections including antiques, dolls and stamps. She used her creative talents in sewing, cooking, baking, gardening and canning. Friends and family will forever remember her delicious bread, pies, sauerkraut and dill pickles. She enjoyed milking her cows surrounded by lots of cats and kittens, and always had farm dogs. Arla loved birds. During her last five years at Colorow Care Center, she had several bird feeders outside her window. She enjoyed music, especially country and western, and was so proud of her son Chad and grandson, Dean Abbott, who played with the Cabin Fever Band. She called all of the members of the band her "extra boys." She loved family get-togethers and parties saying, "They are important." "Tea at three" in her lifetime Ash Mesa home will forever be a legend. Family and neighbors were welcome to stop in every day at 3 p.m. to sit around her kitchen table for tea and home-baked goodies. Her place was dubbed "The Last Resort Cafe" where laughter was the main course, problems were solved and friendships sealed. Scrap booking, writing letters and poems were also some of her favorite pastimes. She dearly loved babies and children. Keeping up with each and every family member or friend was extra important to Arla. Her memory was incredible. She leaves her family and friends with this thought, "In life there is always the good with the bad. My saying is 'Recognize how you are blessed and you won't be depressed.' Arla is survived by sons Ray (Nikki) Schmalz and Chad (Cindy) Schmalz of Olathe; daughters, Marlene Abbott of Worland, Wyo., Joan Kessler, Montrose, Rebecca (John) Borg, La Mesa, Calif., Ramona (Dave) Wall, Cedaredge, Colo., and Julie Fitzgerald, Flagstaff, Ariz.; daughter-in-law Linda Schmalz, Olathe; sisters, Edra Moore, Lancaster, Calif., Bonnie Petrafeso, Lakewood, Colo., and Marilyn Cox, Montrose; sisters-in-law, Anne Schmalz, Montrose and Joyce Schmalz, Delta. In addition, she is survived by 20 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. In addition to her parents, husband and infant son, Matthew, Arla was preceded in death by her son, Art Schmalz of Olathe; sisters, Helen Burch, Hazel Hare and Geraldine Ray; and sons-in-law, Edgar Kessler and Lee Abbott. A funeral mass conducted by Father Enyiaka and Father Mike Walker will be conducted Saturday, March 31 at 10 a.m. at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Delta. A rosary/vigil will take place at 7 p.m. Friday, March 30 at Taylor Funeral Home, 682 1725 Road in Delta. Public visitation will be from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. prior to the rosary. Burial will be in the Olathe Cemetery following the funeral service. All arrangements are under the direction of Taylor Funeral Services.
