Arlen Vernell Benson was born March 26, 1930 to Carl and Stella (Holmberg) Benson in Crooks, SD. He graduated from Lyons High School in Lyons, SD. Read More	Arlen Benson of Canby passed away on Wednesday, March 26, 2008 at the Prairie Lakes Hospital in Watertown, SD. Arlen Vernell Benson was born March 26, 1930 to Carl and Stella (Holmberg) Benson in Crooks, SD. He graduated from Lyons High School in Lyons, SD. From 1952-1953, Arlen served in the United States Marine Corp. He attended South Dakota State University and received his Bachelor's of Science Degree in Agriculture Engineering. On November 21, 1953, he was united in marriage to Marilyn Ellingson in Moody County, SD. To this union, five children were born. Arlen worked hard for his family and held various jobs throughout his life; he managed a fertilizer plant, drove bulk truck for Ralph Hentges, was a school bus driver, and he also worked for Gorder farms. He was an active member of Our Saviour's Lutheran Church serving as an usher and deacon for many years. Arlen enjoyed card games, especially pinochle, bowling, embroidery, playing horseshoes, and fishing. Marilyn and Arlen traveled on the tour bus together and really enjoyed that time. Many memories were made while camping with his family at Long Lake and Big Stone Lake. Arlen loved spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He will be deeply missed by his wife, Marilyn of Canby; his five children: Gene (Patricia) Benson of Eagan, MN; Karin (Craig) Rubis of Lakefield, MN; Keith (Jalene) of Volga, SD; Gayle (Duane) Erickson of Lino Lakes, MN; & Jon (Rebecca) Benson of Blaine, MN; fourteen grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren; sister, Darlene (Duane) Davis of Garretson, SD and brother, Lyle Benson of Sioux Falls, SD. He was preceded in death by his parents. Funeral services will be Saturday, March 29, 2008 at Our Saviour's Lutheran Church in Canby with Rev. Katherine Rood officiating. Interment will be in the Benton Lutheran Cemetery, Crooks, SD. Birk Funeral Home in Canby is in charge of arrangements.
