Arlene died Tuesday, June 30, at her home in Aberdeen. Visitation: 3:00-7:00pm, Friday, July 10, with a prayer service at 7:00pm, at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 South Main Street. Arlene Grandy was born July 12, 1927, to Cecil W. and Lucy Jennie (Hedges) Grandy at Martinsburg, Iowa. The family moved to South Dakota and settled in the Frederick area when she was three years old. Arlene attended country schools and then Frederick High School, graduating in 1945. She attended summer school at Northern State Teachers College in Aberdeen for two six-week sessions in the summer of 1945. She got her Second Grade Teaching Certificate, and in 1946, acquired her First Grade Teaching Certificate. Arlene taught two years in country schools (Richland Township and Palmyra Township). On December 20, 1946, Arlene married Glen M. Bain in Groton, SD. They farmed southwest of Frederick, SD. In the fall of 1952, they moved to a farm three miles west of Savo Hall. The family moved into Frederick in the fall of 1960. Arlene was a member of Frederick United Methodist Church. Her faith was very important to her. She was a leader for the Sod Busters 4-H Club for 14 years. She was talented at sewing, quilting and weaving rugs. She created a quilt especially for each of her grandchildren. Her woven rugs were given to family and friends. She taught herself to knit and crochet and showered her family with gifts of doilies and afghans. Arlene was an avid Minnesota Twins fan. For her 82nd Birthday she was treated to a Twins game at the Metrodome by Travis and Byron, where they lit up the Jumbotron honoring her. She enjoyed gardening, canning, and working on genealogy. She was well known in the community for her garlic dill pickles, making as many as 200 jars in a season. Some of those jars ended up in Hawaii and Alaska. Her garlic pickle roll-ups were always a favorite at family gatherings. Salsa was another of her specialties sought after by her family. For Christmas, the family could expect dried apples, apple bread, and crispies (also known as Elephant Ears) and one of her homemade Christmas ornaments. She lived by the Motto: USE IT UP, WEAR IT OUT, MAKE IT DO, OR DO WITHOUT. Arlene's greatest joy came from spending time with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Family was very import to her. She made a point to attend as many of the grandchildren and great-grandchildren's activities and birthday parties as possible with the help of Jack and Rayma Smith. The great-grandchildren said she gave the best HUGS! She handled life with "Whatever, Whatever". Grateful for having shared Arlene's life are her four children: Byron (Nancy) Bain, Webster, SD, Nancy (Bob Bray) Swanson, Aberdeen, Owen (Jacki) Bain, Huron, SD, and Colleen (Danne) Schlomer, Glenham, SD; ten grandchildren: Tammy (Mike) Day, Tracy (Andy) Dolney, Travis (Shala) Bain, Jenifer (Lonnie) Garrett, Jayson Swanson and granddaughter-in-law Sarah Swanson, Tricia (Steven) Gough, Scott (Amanda) Bain, Kevin (Susanne) Bain, Angela (Adam) Ritter, and Kate (Derrick Wixon) Schlomer; great-grandchildren: Michael and Mara Day, Dylan, Kaden and Taryn Dolney, Brody, Anders and Callan Bain, Cason and Colin Ringgenberg, Vera Swanson, Cassidy and Leah Gough, Camryn and Andrew Bain, Jack, Tyler and Ella Bain, Ariah and Bode Ritter; two step-great-granddaughters: Kyla Melchizedek and Nova Garrett; two sisters: Patricia (Francis) Harrison, Fargo, ND and Mary Jane Kabrud, Aberdeen; two sisters-in-law: Mae Grandy, Tempe, AZ and Marilyn Grandy, Kingwood, TX; one brother-in-law: Lee (Zelda) Bain, Mentone, CA, many nieces, nephews and cousins; and Arlene's special friends: Jeff and Tonya Zinter and family, Frederick SD.
