Pastor Dan Andrews officiated and interment was in Victor Memorial Cemetery. The musician was Carol Alba and Andrew Gross was song leader. Arlene Byrle, an identical twin to Irene Myrle, was born August 25, 1921, in rural Sigourney, Iowa, to Roy and Minnie Horras. She received her education in Sigourney and Millersburg, graduating in 1939. On September 21, 1940, Arlene and Irene married brothers, Melvin and Leroy Smith, having a double wedding ceremony in Killduff, Iowa. Both couples recently observed their 66th wedding anniversary. Since moving to Brooklyn in 1959, she was a member of the Victor Baptist Church, active in Missionary Society, White Cross work and welcoming missionaries and guest speakers to stay in their home. Arlene was a housewife, mother, and Melvin's faithful helper in all aspects of the farming operation. She loved to drive the tractor and work in the field. Her gardens were large and pantry full. Guests were always welcome at their table for food or a competitive game of dominoes. Arlene was an excellent seamstress, making clothes for her children and grandchildren. She was meticulous in all she did, often saying, "Be the labor great or small, do it right or not at all." In her later years she set out to make quilts for her 13 grandchildren, but 40 some quilts later, she left her thimble, needle and thread on the night stand at the nursing home. Arlene and Melvin were blessed with four children, Dean (Jane) Smith of Grinnell, Ken (Donna Jo) Smith of Newton, Linda (Ed) Gross of Victor, and Rhonda (Charlie) Klaassen of Brooklyn; thirteen grandchildren and twenty-seven great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; four brothers, Orville, Howard, Marvin, and Dale; and two great-grandchildren, Gabriella Blycker and Matthew Doubleday. A memorial fund has been established for Victor Baptist Church or East Iowa Bible Camp. Nevenhoven Funeral Services, Brooklyn, were in charge of arrangements.
